There is a museum downtown, in New York City, which preserves a board game produced in Germany during the time when that nation was under the sway of nazism. In this game, Jews are rounded up, and neighborhoods cleared of Jews. Looking at this children's game, leaves one feeling empty and cold. I had the same feeling reading about this a game, about to go on the market this Twelfth month, some call December, to be given as a present on the day some call "Christmas."

My friend Jon Hutson, wrote to tell me that Wal Mart is about to sell a game, " Left Behind: Eternal Forces" In this game, the object is to kill those who have not converted to Christianity, while the on screen characters shout "Praise the Lord..."

This is not my America and I don't think it's yours either. Are YOU going to be the one to let that stand IF true?

I don't think Mitt Romney's Mormonism should be an issue in an election any more than John Kennedy's Catholicism shouldn't have been in 1960. I firmly believe in separation of religion and government to keep freedom alive in this country.

On this 4th of July I am remembering the words of Thomas Paine in The American Crisis, written to inspire nascent America in its darkest hours of 1776:

THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value.

I am an American citizen born in this country, raised and schooled here and a veteran of military service.

I am not now, nor have I ever been a member of any terrorist group, network, religious sect or social clique which advocates the use of terror or violence against anyone in any country at any time, for any reason.

The Iraqis finally settle down and select new leaders and as America's Secretaries of State and Defense lounge comfortably in the Green Zone, the new vice president of Iraq's sister and her one bodyguard are mowed down on a Baghdad street by a shower of bullets. This only a few weeks after his brother was slain.

Young men and women attending Baghdad University, who remember a time when students could hang out together at the cinema or a café, now must look over their shoulders in fear of self-appointed and armed "Morality Police" who will imprison, beat, and maybe even kill them for fraternizing in public.

Is this what freedom looks like?

This morning it came across the airwaves once again - the same phrase I've heard dozens of times in the past few months.  And each time I heard it, it breezed through me, without registering as untrue or unusual or incorrect:

"A Free Nation is a Peaceful Nation".  A Free Nation is a Peaceful Nation.

It's generally an agreeable concept, to be sure.  But is it true?  If free nations are peaceful nations, then how does our President explain the actions of his own country?  After all, the United States of America, the patented Land of the Free, has spent most of the past century at war with someone or something.  The current target is something called terra or someone called evildoers, depending on the month, but history seems to indicate that if it wasn't this enemy, it would be some other.  A War on Saltwater or a War on Chicken farming or a War on War.  Whatever the case, the United States does not have a peaceful recent history.
