The Ned Lamont Effect and an Election Post-Mortem Email Print

Ned Lamont’s concession speech was more gracious and far more inspiring than anything Lieberman has ever done in his political career.

I never imagined that the Republican and Independent voters of Connecticut would metaphorically cut off their nose to spite their face by voting for Lieberman.  Connecticut Democrats and Republicans deserved better – much better.

Ned Lamont is the real deal.  I spent many hours calling potential voters and learned that a shocking number remained ignorant of the candidates, the facts, and the importance of the election as near as two days before the election.  A surprising majority of those potential voters insisted on remaining belligerent to the end.

Mind-Numbing Media: The Last Throes of the Punditocracy Email Print

Back from the void of laziness...

I'm always torn when I write metaposts about blogging. There are two radical positions one can take regarding the dreaded Blogosphere, both of which irk me. At one extreme, you have the right-wing triumphalists who take credit for everything and exaggerate their own accomplishments to ridiculous levels. At the other, you have today's subject.

Meet Bruce Kluger - USA Today contributor, writer for Parents magazine, and trasher of blogs. You probably saw the link to his article on Eschaton recently, but Atrios (as he is wont to do) didn't bother to give it the thrashing it so deserves. (And yes, I realize how ironic it is that I'm now criticizing Atrios for being lazy) Below, you'll find a proper dissection of this truly deranged article, with added snark. Enjoy.

A moment of clarity -- a Joe-free comment Email Print

Sometimes people commit suicide.  Sometimes they do it passively.   Sometimes they do it deliberately.   Sometimes it is over in an instant.   Sometimes it takes years.  Sometimes it is done out of anger, or desperation, or madness, or ignorance.   Sometimes it is a final defiant act in the face of untenable choices.   But one thing never changes.   It always hurts the people left behind.

When I think about the Hezbollah rockets and the Israel's recent decision to expand the fighting, they both strike me as suicidal, but in very different ways.  This brings to mind a third example very different from both of those two.

Rove Spearheads Lieberman Independent Run Email Print

"This is looking really good", says Karl Rove in regards to Joe Lieberman independent run

Washington, DC (APE) - White House aide Karl Rove announced today that he would be taking personal responsibility for the fledgling independent run of Joe Lieberman for Connecticut state senate. He has labeled the race and all its implications as potential "Republican Dynamite".

Lieberman, refusing to accept the will of the Connecticut Democratic party in his loss to Ned Lamont yesterday, announced his candidacy for the same position as an independent in the fall election. The White House later sent a message to Lieberman campaign headquarters stating that 'the boss is concerned with the results and will pledge whatever it takes'.

All day long, the internets have been roasting under the load.  Lieberman's site has been down more than 18 hours.  The State of Connecticut's official site for results is down.  Even Kos was temporarily knocked off the air.

So, because it's as required for a political site today as breathing, here are the current results.

Lamont widening the gap as the last precincts report. It appears he even took Hartford. So long, Joe! All the majors are now reporting Joe's concession speech and Joe's home town paper has called it for Lamont.
CNN now reporting that Joe has surrendered.

Sen. Joe Lieberman has conceded to upstart challenger Ned Lamont in Connecticut's Democratic primary.
Unfortunately, Lieberman proved to be just as egotistical as he had indicated earlier and immediately launched into his indy campaign.
