Scoop on casting of final Harry Potter movie Email Print

With the end of the Bush administration's term of office in sight, members of the administration have been surprisingly successful in lining up employment in the entertainment industry, with two key members accepting roles in the final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Vice President Dick Cheney has agreed to take on the role of archvillan Lord Valdemort, and Education Secretary Margaret Spellings will play the part of Dolores Umbridge. "They are naturals for the roles, explained a spokesperson for the production company. "They won't require any special makeup, because they already look like the characters they play, and they are a director's dream come true. All they have to do is `act naturally.'"

In other news, author JK Rowling has announced that if she writes another Harry Potter book, Defense Against the Dark Arts will be renamed Defense Against Karl Rove.

Rove Spearheads Lieberman Independent Run Email Print

"This is looking really good", says Karl Rove in regards to Joe Lieberman independent run

Washington, DC (APE) - White House aide Karl Rove announced today that he would be taking personal responsibility for the fledgling independent run of Joe Lieberman for Connecticut state senate. He has labeled the race and all its implications as potential "Republican Dynamite".

Lieberman, refusing to accept the will of the Connecticut Democratic party in his loss to Ned Lamont yesterday, announced his candidacy for the same position as an independent in the fall election. The White House later sent a message to Lieberman campaign headquarters stating that 'the boss is concerned with the results and will pledge whatever it takes'.

I Found Another Really Spooky Norman Rockwell Painting Email Print

The comparison between Norman Rockwell's painting from another generation dealing with the subject of free speech and that of the video capture of Charlottean Harry Taylor standing up to tell George Bush that he should be ashamed of himself, really made the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I first saw it here on DKOS. Norman Rockwell has always been one of my favorite artists, and I have always been astounded at his abilities both technically, and the way that he is able to put on canvas some immortal truths about humanity. The comparison between these pictures yesterday is proof of the timelessness of his work.

Rockwell was very prolific, so I was immediately interested in revisiting his works and digging around the internet for any other paintings that really stood out. I found quite a few that were remarkable, but there was one that really stood out for me. I thought it was amazing the way that he was able to capture the ages old expressions of fear and mischievousness as well as stubborn lack of remorse in children, knowing that they have been caught red-handed and in the wrong...

Bush Fingered in Plame Leak? Email Print

Via Josh Marshall at TPM:

A former White House aide under indictment for obstructing a leak probe, I. Lewis Libby, testified to a grand jury that he gave information from a closely-guarded "National Intelligence Estimate" on Iraq to a New York Times reporter in 2003 with the specific permission of President Bush, according to a new court filing from the special prosecutor in the case.

The court papers from the prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, do not suggest that Mr. Bush violated any law or rule. However, the new disclosure could be awkward for the president because it places him, for the first time, directly in a chain of events that led to a meeting where prosecutors contend the identity of a CIA employee, Valerie Plame, was provided to a reporter.

Harry Reid: ". . . right now I have a job to do." Email Print

Excellent AP article on Harry Reid
"I think he should be a commander in chief and not a campaigner in chief. This whole administration can't get out of the campaign mode," the Nevada Democrat said late Tuesday.

"Let them start governing a little bit. They are great at campaigns. Bush's brain, (White House chief of staff) Karl Rove, is a very good campaigner."

Reid, who has sharpened his criticism of Bush over the past month, said Bush's stubbornness is apparent not just in his refusal to budge on the war in Iraq "but on everything we do."

[. . . ]

"I made it as far as I have by not being a partisan, but right now I have a job to do," said Reid, who was elected to the Senate in 1987 after serving two terms in the House.

"It's hard for me to be always nagging ... I like to get along. As I've said, I'd rather dance than fight. But the American people have been pushed against a wall and I'm fighting for them," he said.

Reid recalls how Bush declared upon his first election in 2000 that he wanted to be "a uniter, not a divider."

"That's Orwellian because it has been just the opposite," the senator said.

Rove Replaced As Recovery Czar Email Print

Remember when Bush proclaimed Karl Rove was put in charge of the Gulf Coast Reconstruction:
Republicans said Karl Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff and Mr. Bush's chief political adviser, was in charge of the reconstruction effort, which reaches across many agencies of government and includes the direct involvement of Alphonso R. Jackson, secretary of housing and urban development.

Looks like he got fired from that job:
WASHINGTON – Donald Powell, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., has been assigned to oversee the federal government's disaster recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast, the Bush administration announced Tuesday.

Powell, 64, a wealthy contributor to President Bush's presidential campaign, will be in charge of the long-term plans to rebuild the states hit by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the late summer. The sluggish federal response to Hurricane Katrina, the first and most damaging of the two, particularly has been widely criticized.

Powell is a Bush crony, one of his "Pioneers" who raised more than $100,ooo for Bush-Cheney '04. He's a rich banker, but qualifications in reconstruction? Nah. But hey. At least he's not a horse lawyer.
