"Scalito" Nominated to Supreme Court Email Print

Trick or treat?

President Bush today will name appeals court Judge Samuel A. Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a source close to the White House. Alito, 55, serves on the Philadelphia-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, where his record on abortion rights and church-state issues has been widely applauded by conservatives and criticized by liberals.

Alito, appointed to the appeals court in 1990 by George H.W. Bush, has been a regular for years on the White House high court short list. He was also among those proposed by conservative intellectuals as an alternative to Harriet Miers, the White House counsel who withdrew as the nominee last week.

He lost to Harriet Miers in the first round, right?

He also decided that a woman needs to notify her husband before having an abortion...in much the same way that a mechanic needs to notify a car owner if that brake job is going to run over $200. Women are chattel.  The wing-nuts are going to love this guy.

One of the members of my extended household is a progressive lawyer. She describes Alito as "the biggest piece of (manure) in America". I don't think that was an endorsement.

Spector's progression with this new nomination.  Will he stall, ask for lots of papers, or just try to push it through?  Looks like the 'nucular' option was just put back on the table.  The only good news with this is that Bush's political capital is soooo much lower than it was the last time we had this discussion and even then many repugs opposed it.
