Impeach Bush ? Only If You Are Crazy Email Print

There is a debate raging in the lefty blogosphere lately surrounding the idea of impeachment of Bush. You can view some of these discussions here, here, and here.

All sparked of course by the storm of bad news gushing like a torrent from the White House. Iraq, the economy, healthcare, retirement, plame, torture et al and the polls that represent this collapse.

In the extended let me tell you why its a fools game, and one for left wing extremists to engage in.

You can view the Bush favorability polling results here. They are terrible, he is down to the mid 30's.

The Republican congressional approvals are here. Terrible. 34% approve. 50% disapprove.

However the Dems in Congress fair almost as poorly. 36% approve. 44% disapprove.

The country is telling us they want something different. They want a different direction. by a margin of 28% to 68%. That is a huge message being sent.

Does a protracted impeachment process sound like a new direction ? More partisan fighting that doesn't help a single citizen pay a bill, get a pill, or solve Iraq ? Hardly.

What do people want ?

The war in Iraq     21
Job creation and economic growth     20
Terrorism     14
Rebuilding the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina     14
The budget deficit     9
The cost and the supply of energy     8
Illegal immigration  &nbs p;  7
Bird or avian flu     3
All equally (vol.)     4
Does impeachment solve any of those problems ? Does it tell the American people what the Democrats are all about ? Or does it reinforce the meme that "they are all the same" Partisan fighting.

When you go about your everyday life, and political topics come up, does any of your neighbors talk about impeachment ? Or are they talking about healthcare, the war, their job, their taxes ?

Only political utopians on the left, hell bent of destroying George Bush are talking about impeachment. No one else. A tiny fraction of the people of this country.

George Bush deserves to be impeached, but given his lame duck status and the mood of the country I believe it would be political folly to pursue this course with any serious vigor. Rather we must put forward our vision and leadership for Americans to see, while tying every GOP congressman and Senator to George Bush and his failed presidency - THEN, and only then will be begin to create a majority, a lasting one and move this country forward embracing a platform of greater national unity and discourse, not less.

This I believe is what all those polls are telling us. Enough of the divisive politics that are not serving the people, and start to work for the people - to do the job you are elected to do - which isnt to begin impeachment proceedings.

....but these people have committed war crimes.  Millions have suffered because of these crimes.  They have robbed the treasury, lied to Congress, to the American and world public.

These crimes can't go unpunished or someone else will attempt the same thing in the future.

If we can arrest them after we vote them out, I'm all for it, but sort of that, impeachment is our only avenue to justice.

I believe he's guilty of all sorts of high crimes et cetera. If he is found guilty, impeach him.

We need to send a message that this kind of thing won't be tolerated by our leaders. We can't let them get away with this.

Yeah, it might be better politically for Dems to have him in office increasing hatred of Repubs. Forget that. We Democrats have to learn how to win office on our own merits.

And the WORLD needs this. We need this. I think it would heal all sorts of wounds all over the world if Bush were impeached. The US might regain some face in the world. International relations might improve.

I don't know. I say if the bastard's guilty, impeach him.

about our global image.  If we are to be a nation of laws then we must hold our Administration accountable.  It is our duty and one of our only hopes for a progressive global future.

Excellent points all around here

One seems to be political: Present our vision, Don't support the idea that all politicians are the same, Let Republicans rot in their own creation.

the other...

seems to be ideological: Justice must be done, they actually DO deserve to be impeached -- and not just for political reasons -- and perhaps even despite political repercussions.

The two are in conflict with one another, but both are correct.

Solution: uhhh...perhaps we can get the investigations moving forward, which to their credit congressional Dems have actually done. If anything comes of that, then imeach his ass.

From a political perspective though, impeachment is a little premature in DC, but here we can still dare to dream;)

The more embarrassed and less bulletproof his minions in Congress will feel.

I'd like to see the crap keep hitting the fan for a while.  The general public has been in a morphine-induced sleep for so long that it'll need another year-plus to wake up and smell the bull.

In dreamland, I think impeachment would be great in early 2008, followed by a protracted Senate trial that ends in conviction around October.  Let Cheney take over then--he couldn't do much damage or house cleaning in his final few months.

will be gone long before Bush. John Dean of the Nixon admin was on MSNBC with KO last night. He thinks Fitz is ultimately going after Cheney. Look for Cheney to develop "health" problems in 2006. He will get replaced with someone more electable. McCain?

All the reasons above have merit, but to me the most important one right now is the fact that the line of succession from top to bottom is horrific! Bush, then Cheney, then Hastert, then Ted Stevens, then Condi . . . .no thanks!!!!!

Practically speaking, it won't happen unless we take back the House because the repug House will not present articles of impeachment. We take back the House and it can be done, AND that will produce a Speaker Pelosi who would be in line after W and the Dark Lord--both deserving of an appearance before the War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague.

Other jockeying of the issues aside, its the line of succession that continually haunts me.

but  who in the Senate who voted for the Iraq War authorization didn't lie? Why did "we" all know it was an outrage to attack Iraq, while Johnnycomelatelies like Kerry and Edwards have only just now realized this?  They all make me sick, but let's put our energy toward formulating policies to solve the problems the Dems, face it, colluded in creating out of political cowardice.  And let's give Roberty Byrd a medal.

IF (big IF here) there is sufficient evidence. Not just for the sake of revenge or pleasure (guilty, I admit) but at the same time IF it can be proved Bush committed crimes, sure, impeach the bastard!

I think much or the arguements I read against impeachment assume there won't be good reasons for it, or that it would be based purely on what we know now. But things might change.

In the Newspeak world of American politics, the petty, unjustified impeachment of President Clinton has raised the bar for impeachment of President Bush. That's because the first reaction by the pundits-that-be to an impeachment motion will be that it's a petty, unjustified tit-for-tat.

There's no shortage of smoking guns surrounding Bush. But to get past the current bar, we'd need videos of him pulling the trigger, backed by eyewitnesses of, err, unimpeachable character. We're not there yet, and may not be before 2009.
