The Reid Plan Email Print

Have you read the Reid Plan? I like it. It is an excellent plan. The plan is not final, which is unfortunate. I'm hoping that they will submit the final version shortly.

The question is, will it remain a piece of paper?

Why is the plan so important? Because it forces the administration to obey the senate and to report to the american people. It brings accountability to the White House. And once the reports start coming out, all americans will be able to judge for themselves how well the war is going.

But the administration hates the Reid Plan. They will fight it. I don't think it's going to get an "up or down vote" without a fight. Republican Senators would have to vote for the Reid Plan if it ever came to a vote; the plan is so reasonable that it would be a grave political error for them to vote it down.

The media is going to have a big role to play in this. If they stay quiet, the Reid Plan may be doomed.

We must make sure that the Reid Plan becomes reality.

Senate Republicans Pushing for a Plan on Ending the War in Iraq

By CARL HULSE

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 - In a sign of increasing unease among Congressional Republicans over the war in Iraq, the Senate is to consider on Tuesday a Republican proposal that calls for Iraqi forces to take the lead next year in securing the nation and for the Bush administration to lay out its strategy for ending the war.

For months, Democrats have been hard at work, writing their Iraq proposal. It took a hundred meetings for them to agree on the wording.

And then, they release it, convinced they've played a great political move. Five hours laters, Republicans announce that the the Republican Congressional Proposal for Iraq will be heard.

The media complies. They report that the Republicans have won this round, and they are right. It took Democrats months to do this, and a few hours later, Republicans had rewritten it to suit their purposes.

Dammit. So, what's our next move?

Through the entire document in Reid's office, not once was Bush called "President Bush?"

Also, I  just saw this on Yahoo news (I think) that the requirement to report is not really a requirement, more of a suggestion. OTOH, credit is given to both parties for the plan.

If the whole point is to rein in executive power and provide oversight, giving Bush a suggestion is useless. Give him a pretzel, instead.

No clue what to do. Email the reporter and ask for a more balanced article?

ask for a more balanced article?

I shouldn't be so cynical, because you're right, dead right. We should demand balance. REAL balance.

"Balance" for the MSM is usually some wingnut saying "but then there are detailed studies proving that atheists are more likely to eat their own children."

At which point the reporter/commentator/happy- Katie-Couric-clone says, "well, it looks like there are a lot of different points of view. But I think we can all agree that the fall movies are looking GREAT!! How about that Jake Gyllenhaal!"

It leaves us with a problem, HOW do we get the media to stop being such wimps? Draft someone like Walter Cronkite to slap them them around? Cronkite spoke at a local college last week. About the state of the nation, he was pretty blunt: "We're going staight to hell." Refreshing.

If it means getting the most publicity, then yes, the Republicans win.

If it means moving the other side toward your position, then the Democrats won big.

I'd like to think this really is a win-win situation.
