There's a "list"? Email Print

Veering from my usual area of commentary, here, but a front-page story in my local paper caught my eye this morning, which offers
further evidence that the Republican right-wing is imploding.  The headline was NOT that the Baptist State Convention in North Carolina voted to kick out member churches for knowingly approving, and therefore, "affirming," homosexual behavior.  No, it was this:
"Gay Baptists dismayed by church stance."

That's right. Right there on the front page:  WHAT GAYS THINK.

Imagine that.

And here's what "they" say (my emphases):

"I don't see anywhere in Jesus' teaching that `these' certain people are not welcome in church.  I don't remember a list."-- Mark File, gay Baptist deacon

With 1.2 million members, this group is the second-largest Baptist association in country, and 3500 of its "messengers" attended the State meet-up.  Two years ago this same Convention expelled a church for baptizing two gay men.

These rabble-rousing dissenters at the Convention openly criticized the vote, as well as the board's charge to work on a written policy to exclude homosexuals.  Rob Helton objected,  "If we write a policy, it seems only fair and right that we write a policy on every sin in the Bible."

(Uh oh.  How dare he point out the obvious hypocrisy?)

File continued:

"I just think it's also a horrible lesson to have for your children--having your children in a church that says `these' people are not welcome.  Basically, they are telling them they should also not be welcomed in your house or as your friend.  There's enough prejudice and bigotry out there, we don't need a church to preach it."

(Now he's done it.  He's attacking prejudice and bigotry.)

But Darryl Waissner, a gay former Baptist, pinpoints the ultimate foolishness of this action:

"This group has only alienated itself from people.  God is till in control and has never once stopped loving us for who we have been created to be."

Ever heard such nonsense?  Why, listening to them, you'd think those controlling the Convention weren't Christians.

As sad as it may be, these church leaders probably do have a list--but not one you'd like to be on.  We can only hope that there's also a latter-day Oscar Schindler in their midst.

I grew up in churches that were part of the Southern Baptist Convention, in fact I attended such churches until I was over 30.  It was around that time when "conservatives" mounted a takeover of the organization and turned it in on itself, losing hundreds of churches from the association and leaving the SBC the kind of place that could make it the only denomination to actually endorse the war.

I didn't appreciate it at the time, but I was seeing a precursor to how the extreme right would overtake other religious organizations, the Republicans, and eventually the country.  If one side is both motivated by hate, and sure that they have God's blessing to hate, while the other side is actually trying to live a Christian life, the Christians are doomed.

In the SBC, the lions are now running the show.

by the fact that this breed of lions is now getting so much exposure--literally.

People are starting to look behind the views, now, examining policies, and questioning some of these leaders.  Sooner or later, the light will come on, and people will want their church--and their religion--back.

A cliche, to be sure.  But, it's not as tired as they are!

It's nice to see that people are standing up, however slowly.
