Saturday photoblogging: The San Juan and Colorado Rivers Email Print

despite the rather underwhelming response to last saturday's first photoblogging feature, i'm back again...

last june, i was flying between reno and dallas and snapped this photo of the confluence of the san juan and colorado rivers from approximately 35,000 feet... meeting in southeastern utah in the glen canyon national recreation area, the rivers feed lake powell, the lake formed by glen canyon dam on the colorado river which lies just across the border in arizona...

the images below are, respectively, a satellite image and a usgs topographic map of the same area...

I flew from the left coast to my home state of Iowa and was amazed at the geographic formations.  I have flown too many times to remember, but there was something special that day, the colors were intense, the contrasts were vivid.  It was pretty cool.

I have come back several times to look at your photoblog.  Tell me, because I seem to be unable to discern it on my own, is the significance of what the satellite photo and topo map show, in contrast to your photo, is that the water levels should be higher? Or is it just that it's a interesting photo?  Or is it that the monkey wrench gang lives?
