DNC Spring Meeting to be held in New Orleans Email Print

Howard Dean just announced that the 2006 DNC Spring Meeting will be held in New Orleans.  An excerpt from the press release:

"Today I am pleased to announce the Democratic Party's small effort to help rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region. I look forward to joining Democrats from all across the country in a revitalized New Orleans for the 2006 DNC Spring Meeting.

"Democrats are committed to rebuilding the Gulf Coast, and to rebuilding America's sense of community. Our nation was founded on the notion that we have a responsibility to each other, a shared investment in one another, and the belief that we should leave no one behind. The American people are heroes for coming together the way they did after Hurricane Katrina, and being extraordinarily generous in a time of crisis. We are honored to be a part of that. Together, America can do better."
I think it's a great idea, though I'm somewhat uncomfortable with the turf wars between the RNC and DNC over the (still soggy) soil of New Orleans (see RNC, 2008 here).

More below the flip.

The Republicans would love to claim New Orleans as their own, and not only because they think they can shade it red because them blacks won't be moving back in (yes, I'm serious).  A 2008 GOP convention there would harken back to days of Reagan, which we all know is a sort of security blanket for the GOP.

I like that the DNC will be having its spring meeting there, and I take it as a signal they may not be planning to have the 2008 convention there. I say let the GOP have New Orleans in 2008. It'll be the best political theater in a while.

On a side note, the 2006 Democratic slogan sucks. Initially, I thought it would work, but seeing it the press release above, it just comes off so tired and trite. What do you think about it?

It reeks of the Avis "We Try Harder," which might work okay with rental cars but doesn't play too well in the political arena. Honestly, "We can do better?" Ugh. Ya think? If Dems keep half their party out of the penetentiary, they can do better. I'd like to aim a little higher than that, thank you.

On the New Orleans question, I'm uneasy. I DO say let the GOP have it for their convention -- I can foresee lots of juicy stories (at least in the blogosphere, probably not in the MSM) about how the party uses it for a PR stunt backdrop yet starves it of federal funding and expertise.

What I'd really like to see the Dems do for their convention in 2008 (aside from dropping the stupid ass slogan) is have a convention in Mississippi. MS is the overlooked Katrina victim state, and taking the convention there would also fit in with the recent "Fighting Dems" motto because we'd be taking the message to a very red state.

Yeah, this tag line really, really sucks. It's lame, it has no teeth. It seems so deliberately inoffensive.

So, is this the same as Walter Cronkite's Midterm Convention idea?
