Ferrer the Disaster Vs. Suozzi the Master: Light for NY Democrats! Email Print

What happens when a Democrat running for re-election as a Republican in a Democratic stronghold spends $65 million of his own money against an inept "career insider who just got the nomination because it was his turn and his time".

Answer: 4 more years of a NY City Republican mayor!

It's no secret and no surprise -- Fernando Ferrer was rightly destroyed by pseudo-Demo-Republicrat Michael Bloomberg in the election for NY City Mayor.

I know, you would think the most Democratic city in the nation could effortlessly and consistently field decent candidates. Not so. As Armando adroitly noted:

Dems have buried themselves in NYC mayoral politics. Voting D didn't matter too many said. Will it matter when Weiner runs? These are not switches you turn on and off. Many Dems will rue the day they decided it did not matter about the D in NYC. Come try and make that argument in 2009. It started with Mark Green's despicable runoff campaign in 2001. This year was another nail. Being a D in the Mayor's race in NYC will now be a negative.

Mark my words.

Oy! Yet another project.

But all is not gloom and doom surrounding the Big Apple...

In fact, there's a sort of uprising in the once proud Republican stronghold of the NYC burb known as Long Island! In particular, rising Democratic star Tom Suozzi demolished his Republican opponent in his reelection run as Nassau County Executive. (Word is that Suozzi might use his popularity to make a run for Governor.)

In addition:

  • * Dennis Dillan, strict anti-abortionist and reigning Nassau County District Attorney was dethroned by newcomer Kathleen Rice.

  • * Democrats maintained their majority in the Nassau County Legislature.

  • * Democrats regained control of the Suffolk County (Eastern half of Long Island) legislature for the first time since 1976.

  • * Democrats control both the Nassau and Suffolk county executive seats, and both legislatures for the first time in over 100 years. Woo Hoo!!

As summarized by a poster somewhere on DU:

This is historic. Long Island used to be THE stronghold of the Northeast GOP. This is where Nixon campaigned to start his presidential run. This is where the heart of the Republican Party existed in the State of New York for decades.

Now it is completely destroyed.

Now THAT's what I'm talking about!

Dems had a rather decent off-year election cycle across the entire state -- including the Catskills and beyond.

If you have any of those results. Please post them and let us cherish this time -- and pray it is a sign of things to come in 2006, '08 and beyond.

Yes, in Ulster and Dutchess county, there were sweeping Dem wins in places Reps have held on to for twenty plus years.  And we all know local political machinery ad control leads to national victories.

both in NY and CA with this election is a deepening of the blue, which had been getting a little ... um ... lighter in these states.

People, I hope and pray, are returning to their roots as Democrats after flirting with what looked like "sane" and moderate Republicans in both states.

And hope lives in NY (upstate, right? ;)

What's it gonna take to get the Democrats fired up and sorted out? Spitzer?
