Red Cross President Resigns Email Print

Via WaPo:
NEW YORK -- The president of the American Red Cross, Marsha J. Evans, who oversaw the charity's vast and sometimes criticized response to Hurricane Katrina, is resigning effective at the end of this month, the organization said Tuesday.

Marsha Evans came under fire recently when it was revealed her salary was a whopping $651,000. The press asked Scott McClellan, White House spokesperson, why she was paid so much while other nonprofits, like the Salvation Army, have substantially smaller salaries:

Q This is Salvation Army Commissioner Todd Bassett, is paid only $13,000 a year, plus a house. And my question: Does the President believe the Red Cross and United Way, as tax-exempt charities, ought to be more like the Salvation Army regarding executive salaries?

Scotty brushes off the question. But it does bring things into sharp perspective. Marsha Cross's resignation means she will be enjoying a very comfortable living. That comfortable living is the direct result of contributions many thought were going to Katrina victims and others in need. She gets a fancy house, and Katrina victims get trailer. Nice.

What a mouth.  She should have been replaced when Brownie was doin' such a "heckuva job."

Wish we could believe a competent person would replace her, but I'm convinced this Administration doesn't KNOW any competent people.

I'm afraid you're right, however, about her future.  K Street is still rollin' with the Republican tide, and her new consulting firm can't be too far in the future.

Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle. FDR

It's a non-stop hail storm for this admin.  Kinda makes one believe in karma.

"She gets a fancy house, and Katrina victims get trailer."

Would that the Katrina victims be so lucky as to get a trailer.  I saw a news report a few days ago that showed thousands of FEMA trailers sitting empty, and piling up a $25,000. per month storage charge, while Katrina victims wait & wait & wait for a place to live.

is going through reorganization/management hell as well. Seems this group is disorganized and inefficient from top to bottom.

How much Red Cross pays its president is Red Cross's business.  On the other hand, it's another case of an overpaid CEO.  Nonprofits are supposed to have increased social responsibility and get tax exempt priveleges, so the thing to do would be to write to legislators and ask them to pass laws regulating nonprofits.

Remember too that most (maybe 99%) of nonprofit staff are underpaid.
