Mississippi Still Burning ... Email Print

In a rare show of unity between red and blue blogs, Battlepanda is urging the creation of a blogstorm from both sides of the political spectrum to create publicity about one of the most blatant miscarriages of justice in recent history, the case of Cory Maye, who is sitting on death row in Mississippi.

Maye's crime? Battlepanda links to the Agitator's excellent ongoing coverage:

Let's summarize: Cops mistakenly break down the door of a sleeping man, late at night, as part of drug raid. Turns out, the man wasn't named in the warrant, and wasn't a suspect. The man, frightened for himself and his 18-month old daughter, fires at an intruder who jumps into his bedroom after the door's been kicked in. Turns out that the man, who is black, has killed the white son of the town's police chief. He's later convicted and sentenced to death by a white jury. The man has no criminal record, and police rather tellingly changed their story about drugs (rather, traces of drugs) in his possession at the time of the raid.

Hammer of Truth has been doing an excellent summarization of the case and has links to the blogs getting in on this, as well as contact information and letter suggestions for the governor of Mississippi.

Please take a few minutes to get familiar with this case. It is truly a travesty, and one in which blogs may really make the difference between life and death for one person. Believe it or not, the mainstream media is AWOL on this whole thing.

But what can we do? Besides blogging about it, I mean.

My blog is pretty.

There is always the questionably effective "letter campaign".

But, with types like SusanG and Georgia10 in the blogosphere, I would say that blogging about it and pushing it into the MSM is a very powerful way to make a difference.

So I didn't really answer your question, but I think that 'just blogging' about it is a powerful first step.

Could certainly use some suggestions for that next step:(

But there is now a petition up for people express their dismay at Maye's sentencing, and their insistence on his unconditional pardon by the governor of Mississippi.  Any blog authors out there who are interested should promote a link to the top of your blog or sidebar.  Thanks to any and all for signing.

Email MSM outlets with links.

Write a letter to the governor of Mississippi.

Email groups like ACLU or the Southern Poverty Law Center with links and see if they can look into it.

Blog about it everywhere you can, leaving links in comments.

Email friends with links who can pass the information on as well.

Getting this out there -- huge and in the open -- would almost surely bring a national scrutiny to this case that it needs.

Say it ain't so!

How much blood must coat the hands of the MSM before they start to 'get it'?

100,000 in Iraq. 1 in Mississippi. God knows how many over the years.

The responsibility of the M and non-MSM is to keep power in check by informing the people.

Once they fail in this mission, they accept responsibility for the consequences of that failure.

... to, say, the front page of a very large political blog that is read by hundreds of thousands of activists and government types every day, and ask them?

Anyone know how that could be done?

That would be a pretty good first step.

for Olberman.

And he listens, and responds to email.

Follow this link to Battlepanda, where there are other suggested action items and how to go about amplifying this ... like calling into talk radio with specific points, etc.

Mississippi law provides for an AUTOMATIC review of ALL death sentences.  Also, why the hell hasn't an appeal been filed yet???

My blog is pretty.

There's been totally incompetent counsel on the defendant's behalf. You would probably have a better idea than I do, based on your legal background. Check out the links at the Agitator for the warrants and the blog author's interactions with the courts and talking to attorneys about this.
