Finally, Respected Newspaper Calls Abramoff Scandal Largely Republican Email Print

The good news is that a well respected and widely read newspaper has finallllly labeled the Abramoff scandal as largely Republican---not once, but repeatedly and without pussyfooting.

The not-so-good news is that it's the International Herald Tribune, which most Americans don't read.

Here are a few paragraphs from a January 12th  IHT article:

Abramoff is a hustling Hollywood native whose charm, flamboyant deal-making and readiness to bend or break rules propelled him first to a K Street pinnacle and probably next will lead him to jail. The spreading scandal that now bears his name, and which primarily affects Republicans, yielded a new victim this week: a top lobbying firm, the Alexander Strategy Group.

While Republicans note that Abramoff has Democratic entanglements, too, his far greater involvement with Republicans means that it is the majority party that sees most to fear.

K Street has taken on a lopsidedly Republican cast in recent years, much of it DeLay's doing, and this has paralleled and been partly fueled by a dramatic overall growth in the lobbying industry.

[cut]

DeLay was a force in changing K Street. Until the past decade, lobbying firms tended to hire roughly equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats.

But once Republicans took control of the White House and Congress, DeLay began pressuring lobbying firms to hire or promote more Republicans in what Democrats saw as a breathtakingly aggressive takeover that became known as the K Street Project. An estimated two out of every three corporate dollars go to Republican-dominated lobbying firms.

It is a shame that we must rely on an internationally headquartered paper for such blunt reporting on this issue, but at least it's out there in print [and in a New York Times owned paper, no less].

I'll take the truth where I can get it and pray that it spreads.

blogosphere is an oasis of truth, sanity, and reality in the upside-down, topsy-turvy world gone mad.

Let's call it "L" Street.  The proper response to the last decade of K St. control.

Thanks for spreading the message.

of the National Review (reprinted here in the Salt Lake Tribune) actually says:

It is true that any Washington influence-peddler is going to spread cash and favors as widely as possible, and 210 members of Congress have received Abramoff-connected dollars. But this is, in its essence, a Republican scandal, and any attempt to portray it otherwise is a misdirection.

This is great.  I hope it gets spread around.

Welcome back, btw.

David Bouchard's law firm "Bouchard and Smith",located in Chespeake,Va.,yep, that's right, right where Ralph Reed's turf was once located, was in Jack Abrmoff's vast network of foot soldiers. It did the dirty work for Jack.

How did Jay Sekulow win the RICO case in the Supreme Court that N.O.W. brought against Operation Rescue and other anti-abortion protestershttp://www.acljlife.org/new s/pressreleases/021226_rico .asp? The victory was certainly good for fundraising. Check it out.
