Training the Democrats Email Print

This is an idea off the top of my head. Everyone complains about how "The Democrats" don't represent us adequately, ignoring that WE are "The Democrats" as much as "they" are. But our elected officials do NOT always reflect our views.

But can we train them?

What influences politicians? Well, contrary to popular belief, many politicians I know are indeed driven by idealism. BUT, they are also driven by a desire to win the next election. What wins elections? Votes. What gets votes? Money and volunteer time.

So...let's use our cash and volunteer hours as leverage to influence our politicians. It will require:

a. a commitment of time and/or money on the part of many of us;

b. that we, en masse, write to "The Democrats" telling them what we are doing

The proposal is this. Let's  pick the Alito filibuster as an example. Let's each pledge $1 (or more) and/or 1 (or more) hour volunteer time to the Democratic Sneatorial Campaign Committee or the DNC for every Senator who opposes Alito in each vote (no on Alito, no on colture of a filibuster).

For every Democratic Senator who votes favorably towards Alito in each vote (yes on Alito or yes on coture) we pledge $1 and/or 1 hour to Democracy for America as the opposition within the opposition.

We inform the DNC and DSCC (and our individual Dem Senators) that we are doing this.

If we can do this for a number of votes, there just may be an influx of money rewarding good votes and they may get the hint.

What do people think? Is this even doable? Any modificiations? We all are perenneally short of time and money, but somehow we have to start influencing both our own party and the nation as a whole. This is one way we could do it.

I spoke at length to one of Sen. Byrd's aides yesterday. I don't know which way he'll go.

I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exhaltation. Sherlock Holmes.
