The Real Bob Knight Quote Challenge Email Print

It's only the third day of the new year, and already the nuts are coming out of the woodwork. Take Bob Knight, head of the Concerned Women for America's Culture & Family Institute. He seems to have a problem with the Barbie web site. Why? Well . . .

A poll on the Barbie Doll's website asks children to select their gender, and there are not two, but three choices. ''I don't know'' is the third option, and Christian ministries point out the homosexual agenda behind this latest move made by Mattel, the toy company that owns Girl Dolls, Fisher-Price, and Hot Wheels.

That pretty much says it all. (Incidentally, the website no longer displays "I don't know", instead showing "I don't want to say") Now, I could argue that there are reasons for that option to be available that don't involve a sinister plot to unravel the delicate psychosexual complex of 4-8 year olds, but what's the point? It's Bob Knight. He holds a top position at an organization called the Concerned Women for America and fails to understand how that makes it ironic when he talks about gender confusion. So I'd like to posit a challenge. In the extended entry are seven quotes. Some of them are from Bob, while some are made up or from other sources. See if you can guess, then check below for the solutions.

1.) "It's the idea that well, maybe people aren't born a particular biological sex, or they are but that shouldn't determine their gender identity . . . and that's a very big component of the homosexual activist agenda now."

2.) "In other words, any kid who's not sure about who he is, he's fair game to try to persuade to have same sex acts."

3.) "There's already a great temptation for perverts, sexual predators to use sites like this to find
victims . . . we don't need to make it easier for them."

4.) "It's really steering girls away from the idea of womanhood as predominantly - in terms of Christians - serving the Lord, getting married, having kids, building a home. You don't see any of that with Barbie - it's all about things."

5.) "Toys have a tremendous impact on early development. These girls think of Barbie as an ideal, they think she's normal. It makes it easy to influence them to `alternate' lifestyles."

6.) "There are active homosexual groups in most major corporations now and they do a shake down, where they say, `If you don't promote our events, you're exhibiting bigotry and hatred, and we're going to let everybody know that and you'll feel bad about yourself and maybe it will hurt your sales.'"

7.) "Ultimately, money is at the root of this. Gay culture is big business in America today."

Time's up.

1, 2 and 4 are real quotes from Knight. 3, 5 and 7 are fake. 6 is also Bob Knight, but it isn't about Mattel - it's about Starbucks.

If you got 5 or more correct, then you either cheated and read the article, or you've been immersed in far right-wing culture for so long that it's become part of you. Congratulations, I guess.

Oh, and have a great year.
