Show Joementum the door: shop at the Weicker 2006 store!

Ordinarily, putting up a diary about a for-profit political enterprise is a no-no in these parts. But I think this one is different from the average company-whoring piece in two ways: one, I'm not the person operating the company, and two, buying merchandise from this organization actually is a concrete step toward making a blog cause celebre a reality.
The site is Weicker for Senate 2006 Merchandise, and its purpose is to get out into the community material endorsing the draft candidacy of Lowell Weicker, Jr. against the most odious figure still in the Democratic Party: Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman. The site operator, a friend of mine who goes by the nom de blog strandsofpearl, wishes both to make a little money off her beautiful designs (exhibited below) and to place so many bumper stickers, buttons, and shirts in the Connecticut community that Weicker will see them and realize the popular support for his candidacy is there.

If the name Lowell Weicker sounds familiar, it's because he's the former Republican Senator Lieberman knocked off in 1988. Weicker was one of that rare breed of liberal Republicans, and he ran for Governor as an Independent two years later, narrowly defeating the odious John Rowland. After a successful term, Weicker retired in 1994. But Lieberman's recent antics -- smearing his own party, declaring them traitors for opposing George W. Bush -- have caused Weicker to express interest in taking the Senator on one last time. His major issue: opposing Lieberman and Bush on the war.

A draft movement for Weicker's candidacy has been started here. But you can help now by buying Weicker merchandise here, particularly if you live in Connecticut. If Weicker's name is plastered all over the state, on the cars and chests of ordinary Americans, he will see that the people want him back to defeat the hapless Lieberman. A Weicker candidacy would be quite a benefit to Democrats, who would get lots of free advertising as Weicker railed against the President's war.
So shop at the Weicker store. And thanks for letting me interrupt your dinner to promote a friend's work and a valuable draft campaign in the same breath.
