Political Cortex: Brain Food for the Body Politic

He rose from zero name regonition when he started the campaign. The conventional wisdom and the party establishment mostly pooh-poohed or opposed him.  Yet he prevailed, and he has largely won them over.

The GOP is desperate and are running nasty attack ads. Patrick believes in responding, and he has, but he has not gone negative in the tried and true fashion of political hackery that has driven most decent people from public life for a generation.  Patrick describes them as the people who have checked-out of public life. He is inviting them to check back in. Here is the campaign's announcement of the Rally for Change:

Campaigns for change can often have a defining moment: a moment where the politics of old--of divisiveness and fear--are exposed for what they are; a moment where people of all backgrounds come together to demand a new and better way; a moment where a candidate rises up and calls for change, a change people feel is necessary for all of us to move forward.

This Sunday, October 15, Massachusetts and this campaign will have such a moment, but only if you participate. It will be the same kind of moment we experienced last March, when 2,500 people jammed in and around Faneuil Hall.

Deval Patrick and Tim Murray call on anyone who is tired of the cynicism, the distortions, and the finger pointing, to join them at a rally for change.

They call on anyone who wants a more hopeful and purposeful government to join them at a rally for change.

They call on people who want to talk about what we can accomplish instead of what we can't.

They call on any person who wants to be part of a community again.

They call on anyone who sees the stake they have in their neighbors' dreams as well as their own.

They call on you and everyone you know.

They call on all of us to once again demonstrate the need for new leadership and change.

We urge you to email this far and wide. We urge you to print and post this far and wide. We urge you to come and demand a new way for our Commonwealth.

Meanwhile, our current Governor Mitt Romney, will be featured in a national broadcast sponsored by the Family Reseach Council. It will be called Liberty Sunday, and it will be about demagoguing marriage equality and to rally the religious right going into the elections. The event will be broadcast from a church in Boston.

Let no one say that there is no difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. These events in Boston on Sunday will make the contrasts very clear.

UPDATE: The New York Times reports,

...with GOP incumbent Mitt Romney leaving after just one term to test the waters for a 2008 presidential bid, and the Democrats’ strong nominee, former Clinton administration assistant attorney general Deval Patrick, gaining momentum from his Sept. 19 primary victory, a return of the state’s top job to Democratic control looks at hand. CQPolitics.com has changed its rating on the race to Democrat Favored from No Clear Favorite. Three separate independent polls have shown Patrick with a commanding lead, with one putting him almost 40 percentage points ahead of his Republican rival, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey.
