Al Gore's Response To Bush's Dangerous Space Policy Email Print

Al Gore's response on this dangerous program is below, which I agree with. Just what will it take before we realize the capabilities we have to destroy ourselves, and that in the hands of the wrong people that well may come to pass?

Space is no frontier for weapons. It is in my opinion IMMORAL. And Mr. Gore makes the correct point regarding that this news came out on Columbus Day weekend on a Friday when no one would mention it or even know about it. I can bet I could mention this to people today and none of them would even know what I was talking about.

THAT is also what Mr. Gore is talking about when he claims that we have had an assault on reason in this country's level of debate. If this country were truly a Democracy, these kinds of underhanded plays would not be carried out in the dark of night. The media would report them in the light of day and do so in a fashion that would open the door to debate on all sides with the world having a say in it as well. This is exactly the type of bullying policy that has led us to disaster in Iraq, and if we follow that same course in space we may just well finally destroy ourselves.

From their policy:

"Freedom of action in space is as important to the United States as air power and sea power,"....

That one sentence says it all. Once again, this country's government thinks it even has eminant domain in space to militarize/weaponize it and control who can or cannot go there. And yes, space actually has been militarized in a sense for the last 60 years, but of course, now that this country is not respected on Earth there is in their minds the threat of our satellites being attacked from outer space by ASATS. And while in the future that may well be a scenario because we have done such a fine job of screwing up this planet, we have no right to simply claim space as our own nor to start an arms race there.

Of course, the further militarization of space has been a project long salivated over by the Pentagon as well. Why do you think Bush put his man in NASA? Why all the cuts for other projects including the Hubbell? What an abomination as well from people who claim to be Christians to now want to wage war in space, and I believe that will come to pass at some point.

And it would also be so easy for them to just zap some country off the map and say it was because they attacked their "interests" in space with an ASAT... How would we know the truth and if it was simply just a piece of debris that hit it? And who or what entity oversees what is done in space? Are there laws governing conduct in space? Does Congress have any oversight over this anymore?

No wonder Bush pulled out of the ABM Treaty. Doing so allows these weapons to be tested without fallout. Bottomline, this is a DANGEROUS policy that could lead us down another road we dare not tred on, and we need more Americans of all politics coming forward to speak out and ask questions regarding it.

Thankfully, we have Al Gore as a statesman and advocate for our planet out here now unencumbered by the rules of the beltway that prohibit you from speaking out for what is morally right, to speak about these issues. This is also an environmental issue in the sense that now our Earth will be vulnerable not just to annihilation by our own hand from space as well as Earth, but also from the environmental devastation that using such weapons would cause. And to think the Republican Congress trashed Al Gore's TRIANA project which was peaceful because they said it was too expensive. What flaming hypocrites they are.

Oh, and for those Bush supporters who don't know what the word hubris means, just think of this saying: "Pride goeth before the fall."
