Self-Proclaimed "Patriot" Hannity Urges Democrats to Stay Home Election Day Email Print

Just think of what we read in high school civics books.  We were told that good citizenship was inextricably tied to voting.  This was our contribution toward making our voices heard.

When Dwight D. Eisenhower, the forgotten Republican president, was seeking reelection in 1956 he delivered a brief announcement to the nation shortly before Election Day urging all Americans to exercise their right to vote.  He urged every eligible American citizen to vote, even if that meant voting against him.

We have come a long way.  Sean Hannity, who drips with syrupy self-proclamations on patriotism, has a different view.  Voters should only turn out if they favor the candidates he and his "fair and balanced" Fox News colleagues such as Bill O'Reilly and Neil Cavuto sanction, meaning Republicans slavishly supporting the Cheney-Bush agenda.

Recently Hannity encouraged Democratic voters to "stay home on Election Day," adding that, "your vote doesn't matter anyway."  His rationale was that Democrats should stay away from the polls "for the sake of the nation" since their votes "won't change who occupies the White House" and Democratic "candidates have absolutely no idea how to win the war on terrorism."

Think back to the period prior to the election theft of 2000 that enabled the Cheney-Bush team to take office.  Are Americans more or less fearful since 2000?  Oh, but they shout their quick rejoinder, "But what about 9/11?"

Okay, what about 9/11?  When widows of 9/11 victims demand a real investigation devoid of politics that includes more than witnesses officially sanctioned by the establishment, a demagogue like Ann Coulter declares that they never properly loved their husbands.  What does Coulter know about love or marriage?  Or 9/11?

Tell us, Sean, why Cheney and Bush resisted the idea of investigating 9/11 in the first place.  Oh, that's right, it was more important to fight terror by invading Iraq.  Yeah, but what about Saddam Hussein?

Sean, Saddam Hussein was a former U.S. ally to whom the right's patron saint armed to fight enemy Iran, not to mention helping in the poison gas creation department.  It was our CIA that installed him.  Run that one up your patriotic flagpole, Sean.

That poison gas, incidentally, was used to gas Kurds in Iraq's northern provinces, Sean, but then again the neocons had an argument for that.  "We had a different enemy then!" they proclaim.  Oh, so we ignore genocide on the one hand, right Sean!  It was in season then and we saw no reason to bother ally Saddam as long as he supplied America with oil.

Then the neocons decided Saddam Hussein had to go, Sean, and that meant he was suddenly the person to attack to fight the war on terror.  Forget about the fact that he hated Osama bin Laden with a passion and wanted to kill him.  Forget about the fact that your heroes Cheney and Bush let bin Laden's family leave the U.S. after the 9/11 attacks.

Do you suppose any of this could have anything to do with Saudi oil, Sean?  I guess the Carlyle Group with Poppy Bush and Henry Kissinger doing lucrative business with the Saudis is an irrelevant factor, right Sean?

Didn't the bin Laden family help set up young George W. in the oil business way back when, Sean, to steer Junior Bush away from his steady drinking and give him something more constructive to do?  Is all this really irrelevant, Sean?

As those Republican candidates keep telling us on the campaign trail, it is important to win the war on terror.  They have shifted it to Iraq, citing resistance against American occupation.  John Murtha and others who know something about war and actually fought for America, Sean, unlike your Chicken Hawk policymaking allies, tell us that what we have is an insurgency and they feel occupied.

Speaking of war activity, Sean, you look able-bodied.  How about practicing what you incessantly preach and enlisting!  Maybe then you would be too busy to be a naughty boy and tell voters to avoid exercising what has been called an American's most precious right of citizenship.
