Religion Taught In Public Schools and Other Surprises

Also, a Republican governor is reportedly a staunch advocate for substantially expanding governmnent-funded health insurance, and the minumum wage still hasn't been raised since 1997. What's next?
Religion Taught In Public Schools and Other Surprises
So, the Supreme Court is refusing to hear the case of parents complaining that their children are being taught Islam in California's public school system. What on earth is going on here?
Apparently, since it wasn't bringing the case forward, the ACLU is snug with this development. But if schools were teaching the Christian Bible, the ACLU would be all over it in an uproarious protest.
Maybe the mystery unfolds if the now more conservative Supreme Court (thanks to George Bush's two appointments) is planning to allow Christianity to be taught in public schools as well, in which case they can't in good conscience strike down the Islam instruction.
But that may backfire on them, since then some students would probably want to have Wiccan classes, in all fairness, and the Court could just not abide by that. Or could they? I'm being more and more surprised every day by developments.
For instance, the Massachusetts legislature has implemented a new subsidized health insurance benefit, which is now available for that state's citizens who earn 300% of the federal poverty level. The federal poverty level is $9800 per year for a single person.
What SURPRISES me is that Massachusetts' Republican governor Mitt Romney is reportedly a staunch advocate of the new program. What? His early administration instituted deep budget cuts for the state. Will he change his stance on expanding subsidized insurance benefits for Americans if he's quickly elected president? I guess only time will tell.
Another thing that surprises me is that the national minimum wage hasn't been raised in nine years. Are they kidding me? The cost of living has increased by almost 40% over the last nine years. If some people didn't have to work for the $5.15 per hour minimum, maybe they wouldn't need to partake in other government programs like Medicaid and food stamps, etc. Maybe the Republicans in congress who are obstructing the raise should consider that.
I'm looking forward to what I hope is another big surprise---things finally settling down in Iraq.
