 First, Admit the Lie.

I have a modest proposal for all of our leaders whether they are Dems or Repubs. In order to make real progress in the mess we've made of Iraq we must first admit that we were wrong to go there in the first place.

We must put ourselves in the positions of those who's lives have been terminated, ruined, or drastically changed through our illegal invasion. Let's do something that is amazingly difficult for the average American citizen, let's put ourselves in the shoes of the average Iraqi citizen.  Any one of us would want an apology from the country that invaded us and 'broke' us before we would be willing to take more advice on how to live our lives or run our country.

As a nation, the U.S. should abjectly apologize to the Iraqis for the grievous sin of our invasion. We should beg their forgiveness, beg the forgiveness of 'Old Europe',  and beg the forgiveness of all the other wiser heads whose advice we ignored in the runup to occupation.
Then we can beg the entire world community and especially the Arab countries for help in fixing the mess we made. This appears to be a logical first step toward the monumental task of repairing the carnage and disaster we've imposed on Iraq.
I don't believe Pres. Bush is capable of the introspection and humility needed to make the necessary apology. That would destroy the entire carefully crafted persona that has been developed for him by Karl Rove, Karen Hughes, et al. He would have to change his John Wayne swagger to a Dalai Lama shuffle....it probably can't happen.
Can we wait two more years until a Democrat takes the helm? Will the next Pres. agree with this path? Can W. be cajoled into making an honest moment of contrition by James Baker, Scowcroft, or other eminences? Who knows. All I can say is that if I had lost family members, my home, my ability to care for my children, an earnest apology would be a tiny, but important part of washing away the sea of sin in which America is wallowing. God bless us all.
