Rove May Leave Within Weeks. Email Print

The widely respected, subscription only U.S. News Bulletin (A joint operation between U.S. News and World Report and the Bulletin News Network) is reporting that Rove might well be experiencing his final days at the White House:

The rumors that chief White House political architect Karl Rove will leave sometime next year are being bolstered with new insider reports that his partisan style is a hurdle to President Bush's new push for bipartisanship. A key Bush advisor tells the US News Political Bulletin, "Karl represents the old style and he's got to go if the Democrats are going to believe Bush's talk of getting along." The advisor said a departure might come in "weeks, not months." A Rove ally, however, noted that he has a record of out-witting his critics.

In addition, I've heard/read that, although the result of the midterms reflected VERY poorly on Bush's Brain, the White House is forced to retain Rove through the conclusion of this administration for the simple reason that Rove knows too much.

To me that means the White House believes Rove is not above a tell-all book if the situation served him.

Yes, he had a bad election. But really, should it be held against him, one election? (I'm talking strategically, not morally or on his principles.)

I'm wondering if he's being pulled out of the White House in order to get started -- intensely -- on 2008 elections. Like ... he'll be doing nothing but re-wooing the base and organizing and concentrating on the next election cycle. Which, I admit, scares me.

There never seems to be any shortage of rumors about Karl Rove.  But, there are several possible reasons to believe this one is more than rumor.

Ongoing legal actions are a potential motivation for Rove to leave. If the Wilson lawsuit isn't dismissed, it will be in the discovery phase in the coming weeks - meaning document requests and depositions of witnesses. This would be in addition to the case agaist I. Lewis Libby. Simultaneous legal actions are bound to be a drain on the White House, particularly in the current political environment.

More likely, Republican leaders belatedly are  realizing  that Rove's 'talents' better suited to campaigns, not the administrative phase. If so, they may prefer to have Rove working full time on the 2008 campaign. Rove, for that matter, may long for the action (and consulting fees) of a Presidential campaign.
