NYS Senator Stephen Saland Betrays Voters with Obsessive Veil of Secrecy Email Print

In an era of White House government secrecy not seen since the paranoia of Richard Nixon swept across our great nation, it is particularly disturbing to see one of our local officials denying his constituency insight on his positions -- from stem cell research to rocketing property taxes.

NY State Senator Stephen Saland is the official at issue -- a seeming opaque and obsessively defensive legislator from the 41st district.

In an extensive search for information regarding Senator Saland's positions, I accidentally found more information about Dick Cheney's secret energy task force than I did about Senator Saland's positions on just about any issue.

Ironically, one thing I was able to find was an explanation of why I couldn't find any meaningful information about the Senator.

First there was this piece from The American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) that detailed Senator Saland's refusal to share his positions on those issues that were most important to New York's and America's Seniors.

Second, there was this enlightening piece from Vote-Smart.org  (Touted as 'Voter's Self Defense' against government spin, secrecy, and corruption)

In bold red lettering, Vote-Smart.org explained and appealed:

SENATOR STEPHEN M. SALAND REPEATEDLY REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY RESPONSES TO CITIZENS ON ISSUES THROUGH THE 2006 NATIONAL POLITICAL AWARENESS TEST WHEN ASKED TO DO SO BY

Key national leaders of both major parties including:

John McCain, Republican Senator
Geraldine Ferraro, Former Democratic Congresswoman
Michael Dukakis, Former Democratic Governor
Bill Frenzel, Former Republican Congressman
Richard Kimball, Project Vote Smart President

Over 100 news organizations throughout the nation also urged their candidates to supply their issue positions through the National Political Awareness Test.

Urge Senator Stephen M. Saland to pass the National Political Awareness Test.

In stark contrast, Senator Saland's Challenger, Democrat Brian Keeler, has been completely forthcoming with his positions on all major issues.

To begin, the AARP was able to list Mr. Keeler's views on those issues important to New York's Seniors which you can view here.

Notice Senator Saland's space is marked by repeated notes that the 'Candidate chose not to respond'.

More importantly, Democrat Brian Keeler's website dedicates an entire section to issues with numerous tagged links to each specific issue (e.g. Environment, Property Tax, Election Reform, Albany Reform, Education, etc.) -- plenty of information for rightfully inquiring electoral minds.

No such resource exists on Mr. Saland's website.

So why the secrecy? Why does Senator Saland feel the need to keep his positions secret from his constituency? These are questions Mr. Saland needs to answer.

How could someone possibly vote for a candidate who keeps their views secret from the people they're supposed to be representing?

I think the people of New York are fed up with the self-entitlement that many current politicians feel they have when it comes to divulging meaningful, unspun information to the voting public.

Clearly they don't want you to know the TRUTH -- something of which they obviously don't think their constituency would approve.

If they did, I'm quite positive they'd do everything in their power to make sure the voters knew about it.

Seems Senator Saland has garnered some very poor political habits from his friends in the White House -- something we can do without here in the Empire State.

Open government? Looks like it's time for a change!

And don't forget to vote on Tuesday, November 7th.
