Power from the Sky Email Print

Ever see that commercial where the guy is trying to sell you on some "inventor's club?"  The one where the guy says "that thing where you clap and turn off a lamp?  That was my idea."

Well, this was my idea, darn it.  And now someone else has beaten me to it.  Maybe, I should have joined the club.

Sky Windpower is taking advantage of something we've always known: windspeed is higher at altitude.  Only they're going higher than just putting their windmills on a pole.  Much higher.

...there is far more than enough energy in high altitude winds, miles above the earth's surface, to supply all the world's power needs.

Sky Windpower (whose web site doesn't exactly instill confidence) is out to put flying platforms at 35,000 feet.  These platforms would be a kind of "autogyro" kind of like a kite version of a helicopter.

But the spinning blades that both capture the wind and hold up the platform, would also serve to generate power.  That power would be channeled back down the tether, turning the system into a windmill that was located in an area that gets far more wind than any spot on the Earth's surface.

Just remember: I had this idea first.  Sure, I didn't actually build anything, or get a patent, or... well, do anything but gab about it.  But it's mine, I tell you!
