The Canary Dies

Throughout the debacle that is the Bush administration, Matthews has been quick to defend Bush against all critics, and even quicker to sneer and smear Democrats who have spoken out against the insanity. Howard Dean? Please. The name can't get past Matthew's lipless beak without a roll of the eyes and a twitter of laughter. Even those who have dared questioned the president's authority to break the law at will have faced the scorn of the man who bears an uncanny resemblance to the Mr. Hyde version of Tweety Bird.
Then this weekend, on the subject of Iraq...
Here's a hint: Iraq does not equal Vietnam.
Instead, Matthews pointed to another military engagement. Another spot where a supposedly conservative president lead America into a morass, talked tough, attacked all critics, then split when things got hot. The new meme: Iraq = Lebanon.
According to Matthews: "I think we're in a Lebanon situation. I think there are two sides getting ready to fight and I think we've got to get out of there before it looks like we're picking sides."
That's a long way from "staying the course." Of course, even the White House is starting to realize that infinite repetitions of nonsense don't seem to be affecting the reality on the ground. As it becomes more and more evident that leaving Iraq within the immediate future is the only possibility, expect them to air more and more possible comparisons until they find the one that equals "death with dignity."
Hey, it was Reagan behind the fiasco in Lebanon. If Reagan did it, it must be okay. Isn't Bush the heir to Reagan's legacy? Iraq=Lebanon, Bush=Reagan. See. It's a good thing!
So don't be too sure that Tweety has left his cage. When it comes to Iraq, Lebanon may be the best spin they can find.
