Mything the Point on "Honor and Dignity" Email Print

Myth: A traditional story accepted as history; serves to explain the worldview of a people.

Myths are as old as humanity. Some provide useful insights.  Some provide comforting notions. Some are merely entertaining.  Some are downright dangerous.  Rulers have relied on the power of myths to lead and mislead people since time immemorial.

Misleading myths (aka "Mything the Point"), like all lies, beget more lies. That is why we need to weed them out on a routine basis.  If we let them go unchallenged, they will run riot and eventually choke us in our sleep.

Which brings me to a myth that needs to be uprooted:

RESTORING HONOR AND DIGNITY TO THE OVAL OFFICE

I know everyone thinks the Clintons trashed the joint and then tried to clean out the White House the way trailer trash clean out a hotel room after an extended stay, but Honor and Dignity were never at risk.  They are intangible assets.   Besides, honor and dignity aren't like wallpaper and drapes.  They are not part of the office decor.  I make this (what I hope is an obvious) point because I want you to see that Bush is just as slick as his predecessor when it comes to language.  Here's something that probably escaped your notice.  Bush never promised to restore Honor and Dignity to the Presidency.  He promised to restore it to the OFFICE.

Brilliant eh?  And don't even think of challenging him on that point, because he's ready. Know what he did?  He put in a NEW RUG!  I am not kidding.  Of course it's not just any old rug. It's magic.  It communicates a sense of optimism that permeates the Oval Office like a force field.  Try not to get too excited, OK?  Besides, the important thing is it's dignified.   It graces the floor.  He gave his wife the honor of picking it out.  So there you go...dignity and honor..restored to the Oval Office.  The man is a man of his (deceptively chosen) word.  You got a problem with that?   Write your congressman.

Ok...so I can't say he lies like a rug.  But I still think he is hiding something.   Remember this is a guy who has pulled so many boners that on July 30, 2003 the White House Press Corps[e], momentarily rose from the dead and got him to admit, "I take personal responsibility for everything I say, absolutely."

I'm glad we are clear on that because I've got issues.

Here's why I bring all this to your attention: George Bush said,"It was a shameful act for someone to disclose this important program in a time of war."  Of course he was talking about the people who leaked information disclosing his illegal wiretapping, and illegal use of torture chambers in Eastern Europe.  Well, if it's good for the goose take a gander at this factoid:  Whoever leaked Valerie Plame's identity destroyed a long-standing operation aimed at disrupting nuclear proliferation threats to the United States.  "Shameful"doesn't begin to capture the magnitude of that  betrayal.   The word best describing that comes a little later in the dictionary, but it fits it to a "T".

Speaking of words that begin with "T", this first myth begat another myth:

TRADITIONAL VALUES

I don't know which is more infuriating, that claim or the charade of this administration wrapping itself in  the mantle of responsibility, accountability, compassion and courage.  Either way, I'm not going to hold my breathe waiting for Bush to admit the Emperor has no clothes.

Just because the present tenants of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue make a mockery of our values doesn't mean traditional values are a farce, or even irrelevant.   At times like these, traditional values are more important than ever.

Speaking of traditional Republican values, let's consider the fall guy.  You hear me Scooter?  I'm talking about you.  You have made so many bad choices, you don't have any good ones left.  That's your problem. In your official capacity you chose to betray every principal of honor and responsibility you were taught.  You bring shame to your dojo and dishonor O-sensei.  That is a mark you will carry for the rest of your life.   Spare your family the shame and come clean while you still can.

Here's the good news: This Passover you can make a choice. You can be a mensch, stand up and liberate yourself from this willful bondage, or you can sacrifice your parent's first born son to the false god of empire.  This year is going to be different from all other years. This year, there is only one question worth asking:  What will you choose?

At the end of the day, all I can say is if you still think "traditional values" are just a marketing tool, then you really are Mything the Point.
