'Operation Iranian Freedom' Email Print

"President Bush is denying that he's planning an air strike on Iran. So you know what that means, they're planning an air strike on Iran."
-- David Letterman 4/11/06
War geeks will be quick to point to Iran's recent milestone of uranium enrichment as 'proof' that Iran is planning for nukes, "Why on Earth would the nation (Iran) with the 3rd largest proven reserve of oil care about developing nuclear power?"

They'll race to answer their own question, "They don't care! They're just doing this so they can terrorize us with their nuclear weapons. President Bush is completely justified in preparing military strikes on Iran."

As logic's advocate, you should at this time pose your own question, "Why would Canada, the nation with the 2nd largest proven reserve of oil care about developing nuclear power?"

They'll inevitably respond, "What? You really think Canada is going to try to Nuke the U.S.?"

And you retort, "Of course not, you idiot. Do you?"

Failing to catch the point, this dizzying display of incapacity will continue untill you finally concede that they're incapable of admitting why they really think Iran's motives are defined by violence -- that 'Islamic, America-hating, Middle-East, terrorist-loving' countries could have no other motive for their actions other than offensive militaristic objectives.

Frankly, my logic here is disingenuous... for I too believe that uranium enrichment by the Iranians is much more likely a result of their desire for nuclear weapons than for any other reason. And, of course, comparing Iran to Canada is an utterly ridiculous pursuit as well.

Think about it. If you were a country who felt threatened by the sole global super power, would you work tirelessly to build nuclear weapons as a deterrent to that power's considerable destructive heft?

You bet your ass you would!

That's why the administration is so 'sure' Iran is developing nuclear weapons -- because that's exactly what this administration would do if they were in Iran's position.

It's a never-ending cycle of provocation and reaction -- citing the results of that provocation as motive for further provocation and inevitably military intervention.

That's why you can count on an eventual, if not immediate U.S. military attack on Iran. Neither genius nor limb-venturing is needed for that conclusion.

Think of it as the continuation of 'Operation Iraqi Freedom' except this one might actually have real ties to terrorist groups (including al Queda), and real enriched uranium (though probably not from Africa). And who knows, it might even have real intelligence that gives real insight into real threats and is interpreted with real integrity and acted upon with real leadership.

But I doubt it.

'Operation Iranian Freedom' here we come.
