So Blogs have Potty Mouth. Big Deal! Email Print

Absent any meaningful thoughts of policy or action, the political right has focused on yet another lame crusade -- highlighting internet potty mouth on political sites. I can hear them now... "Won't someone please think of the children!!"

Anyway, the strawman of profanity assumes center stage with the Republican party, as substance and ideas exit stage left and the political right secures itself a place in the pansy hall-of-fame.

In fact, Republicans' whining about the 'enraged' left is purely devoid of any discussion regarding the actual content of the articles to which they refer. Perhaps they've submitted to the fact that they're unable to compete with the left on policy issues. Perhaps they simply feel most comfortable lowering themselves to the nether regions of political distraction -- the only region in which they've been able to assume control in the political world.

Even there, however, their torch dims as much of today's profanity-laced blogging was inspired by none other than 'Big Time' Dick Cheney himself.

The Attack

The first full-throttle attack on Lefty blog potty-mouth came from the Washington Post when they profiled progressive blogosphere icon Maryscott O'Connor at MyLeftWing.com. They were careful to note no less than 16 occurrences of foul language in their meticulously documented article.

"WAKE THE [expletive] UP," she writes... I just want to see these [expletive] swinging from their heels in the public square,"... "Laura Bush Talks; No One Gives a [expletive],"... yahooish, zealotic piece of [expletive] inhabiting the White House... "Go [expletive] Yourself, Mrs. Cheney" and "Bush Must Be HIV Positive By Now (you can't [expletive] 500 million people and not get infected)."... "MAKE SOME [expletive] NOISE ABOUT DARFUR... (again) "WAKE THE [expletive] UP" instantly appears ... (and again) "WAKE THE [expletive] UP" to Daily Kos... Everything he touches turns to [expletive]... "I. Despise. These. [Expletive]!"... "Thank you for the kick in the [expletive]."... "I wrote to my [expletive] so-called representatives."... "I also wrote to my [expletive] congressman to get off his [expletive] [expletive] and do the right [expletive] thing."...

Now the Wall Street Journal drOP-dEaD page has cleverly captured DailyKos in the same awkward position.

From a primary post on the same subject [Rove's demotion] on the Daily Kos, widely regarded as one of the most influential blogging sites in Democratic politics now: "I don't give a ----. Karl Rove belongs in shackles." "A group of village whores have taken a day off to do laundry."

Intense language like this used to be confined to construction sites and corner bars. Now it is normal discourse on Web sites, the most popular forums for political discussion.

But who are these people? And why didn't they mention the acid-tongues of the right? Heck, our entire foul-mouthed inspiration came from none other than the current Republican combo of Dick n' Bush. Lest we forget...

[In June of 2004], Cheney, serving in his role as president of the Senate, appeared in the chamber for a photo session. A chance meeting with Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (Vt.), the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, became an argument about Cheney's ties to Halliburton Co., an international energy services corporation, and President Bush's judicial nominees. The exchange ended when Cheney offered some crass advice.

"F**k yourself," said the man who is a heartbeat from the presidency.

This is the Vice President of the United States of America we're talking about -- standing on the Senate floor, no less. How does that possibly compare to some blogger, lounging around in his underwear and leisurely clacking away at his computer?

In fact, there is only one thing that Cheney's grave transgression could possibly compare to -- and that would be the flagrant and flatulent curse-fest perpetrated by our beloved oaf-in-office.

This was not the first foray into French by Cheney and his boss. During the 2000 campaign, Bush pointed out a New York Times reporter to Cheney and said, without knowing the microphone was picking it up, "major-league Asshole." Cheney's response -- "Big Time" -- has become his official presidential nickname.

Then there was that famous Talk magazine interview of Bush by Tucker Carlson in 1999, in which the future president repeatedly used the F-word.

In fact, Republicans were downright supportive of profanity when it was dealt in the direction of the Democrats.

Republicans did their best to defend the vice president. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), while pointing out that he was unaware of the incident, described Cheney as "very honest" and said: "I don't blame anyone for standing up for his integrity."

And it was duly noted that "language unbecoming a senator" is still not bad enough to be considered "language unbecoming a Dick"!

There is no rule against obscene language by a vice president on the Senate floor. The senators were present for a group picture and not in session, so Rule 19 of the Senate rules -- which prohibits vulgar statements "unbecoming a senator" -- does not apply, according to a Senate official. Even if the Senate were in session, the vice president, though constitutionally the president of the Senate, is an executive branch official and therefore free to use whatever language he likes.

So if the political right is truly smitten by a little foul language, then perhaps they should look to their fearless, foul-mouthed leaders to actually set a positive example for once -- free of their deeply-feared obscenities.

As Atrios said earlier today somehow using a few cuss words makes 'em all feel faint, but repeatedly calling your opponents traitors without any justification, well that's just perfectly civil!
