A disabled Army SGT's musings Email Print

There are a lot of issues that affect veterans happening in Washington D.C. and elsehwere in the nation. They may affect you, or a family member or a friend. With 26 million veterans in America, the odds are that you know a vet, have a vet in the family or are one yourself, or may become one in the future and these issues will have an impact somewhere in your life.

The first issue is lawyers for veterans to be able to get their veteran benefits, many people say hey wait you have service organizations that do that for free, but the problem is they are all over worked, they see the big picture, but when it comes to individual claims, they suck, they want to use the KISS method (keep it simple stupid) is that for the veteran's benefits or their's to make their work load easier? Bottom line if your claim is approved or denied, they still get their paycheck. Here is an article about it, I encourage the passage of a system similar to what they have for SSD claimants 25% or a maximum of $5300 dollars, if it's good for disabled Americans, it should be for veterans.  http://www.reviewjournal.co m/...

The second issue is the Veterans Disability Commission that wants to review SSD payments against veterans benefits to see if veterans are getting paid to much money, ludicrous idea if you ask me, SSD is an insurance policy that all Americans pay for thru their Social Security taxes, it is INSURANCE in case you become disabled, it is seperate from regular Social Security. The VA compensation is the governments way of compensating veterans for injuries or medical problems they incur thru military service to this nation, since there are no large lump sum payments like civilians can sue for against private companies, the monies are meant to pay for the pain and suffering for a lifetime, loss of potential earnings etc, you all can see this picture.  See their press release and other associated stories here http://www.vawatchdog.org/. ..

So the fact that George W Bush appointed a Bi-Partisan committee that is a stacked deck with 9 Republicans appointees and 5 Democrat Appointees, means we are fighting a "stacked deck" it appears their purpose is to balance the budget, i.e. tax cuts on the backs of disabled veterans, does anyone really believe a disabled veteran who is married and has a house, two cars, kids in school and life's other bills is getting rich on $2600 a month and SSD payments, believe me I would rather still be working at the Post Office working OverTime making 70,000 a year, I was better off, and I still had my health. Now I have less money and in pain every day. Where is the justice in this picture? There isn't any, that is why I believe the commission's suggestions are not due out until after the 2006 mid-term elections. Who wants bad news for veterans just before an election.

Veterans don't want any hand outs, we just want what we earned and deserve, not any more and not any less, we are like Rodney Dangerfield, we just want RESPECT, we think we earned that much by serving our nation.....
