Nevada goes democratic in '06

May 15, 2006
Nevada will go democratic, predicts a congressional candidate. "There are five democrats running in the primary for Nevada's 3rd. congressional district, all are hoping to get the chance to unseat republican incumbent John Porter, but only one stands out. Barry Michaels, a newcomer to the scene is certainly not one of your ordinary politicians.
Seven years ago Michaels was being released from a federal prison camp where he served a twenty-one month sentence for securities and tax violations stemming from an airline venture he founded in 1992. "That was then and this is now says" Mr. Michaels, a chiropractor who early on in his career turned entrepreneur. A few years ago when most of his peers were thinking of retiring, Michaels returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and expects to soon receive his Masters in public administration.
Michaels says; "it's easy to criticize others for what they haven't done, but harder to do what needs to be done. To often, political candidates run attack campaigns for the lack of their own originality. Today, what our country needs are leaders, not followers, individuals with the experience, understanding and above all the foresight not only to recognize potential problems but to also solve them". Michaels believes there's never been another candidate with his type of experience who can relate to their constituency the way he can. "After all, how many of them understand first hand, the problems associated with social security, Medicare, the prescription drug plan and at the same time be a single parent driving his kids to public school. I also know what it means to be at the top of the world as well as the bottom, to have school loans and be among those millions who have no health insurance coverage. These are issues that affect so many Americans and need to be addressed now. That's why I need your help to have my voice echo loudly, in the halls of our nations capital."
Traditionally, campaigns are run by raising large amounts of money, with the majority of the funds coming from contributions made through political action committees. Michaels refuses to accept these funds and considers them to be nothing more than legal bribes. He believes "with these contributions come the expected favoritism." Instead, he's putting his money where his mouth is by financing the majority of his campaign with his own funds. As a creative entrepreneur he intends to take his campaign to the streets utilizing his uniquely designed patriotic barrels. By having an estimated 250 of them on the streets throughout the city collecting loose change.
"If what we want is good and honest representation, we need to look at the candidates for who they are and not just how much money they have or can raise. After all, success is not always measured in dollars and cents."
