Bush's 'Ordinary Americans' -- Are you one? Email Print

Yesterday, Bush "insisted... that the United States does not listen in on domestic telephone conversations among ordinary Americans."

Got that? 'Ordinary Americans'!

Bush doesn't spy on 'Ordinary Americans', but he didn't specify what an 'Ordinary American' is -- so many questions left unanswered, like...

...Do 'Ordinary Americans' wear a sign that tells everyone (including the NSA) that is their status?

Is there an 'Ordinary' scale used by 'Ordinary' Government workers that can standardize this appraisal?

Are there different levels or intensities of ordinary-ness? And is the level of spying dependent upon that rating? And if so, who does the rating?

Can you switch from 'Ordinary' to 'Unordinary' and vice-versa?

Are some 'Ordinary Americans' more 'Ordinary' than others?

What do you think the definition is of 'Ordinary American'? I tried looking it up in the 'American Heritage' Dictionary, but there doesn't seem to be any such entry.

So perhaps it would be appropriate to guess President Bush's working definition of 'Ordinary American' (which he obviously has, otherwise he wouldn't have used the term, right?)

The Unordinary American

First, it might be easier to establish what is not Bush's 'Ordinary American' and then move on from there.

For starters, 'Unordinary' Americans are undoubtedly incapable of pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. They're heavy beneficiaries of the 'welfare' and 'quota' systems, and are largely void of any God (that matters).

Despite their undeserved fortunate positions, they protest and form organizations that work against 'Ordinary Americans' while using deceptively patriotic names like 'Center for American Progress', American Civil Liberties Union', 'Americans Coming Together', 'Americablog' and 'Americans United For Change'.

(Warning: They've even been known to marry outside their color or inside their gender.)

And then there are 'Ordinary Americans'

In contrast, we have the beloved, and not-spied-upon 'Ordinary Americans':)

These types of 'Ordinary Americans' -- the preferred American -- supports the war in Iraq and they support our troops -- body armor or not. Any decent 'Ordinary American' does.

The 'Ordinary American' appreciates the finer things in life -- like Nascar, clearing brush, and talking with 'real' folks.

They believe in 'sound science', and tactical nuclear weapons.

They understand that both the media and Hollywood are infested with loathsome liberal propagandists and pornographers.

They regularly attend church (and only church).

They own a Remington or a Winchester. They drive a Ford F-Series. They hunt just for fun, and they believe T-Rex and Adam coexisted.

They know their place in society and in the home, and they are grateful for that place.

Unfortunately, many of these 'Ordinary Americans' often lose their jobs to low-paid 'Unordinary' Americans.

And last, but certainly not least, 'Ordinary Americans' avoid the three Dangerous 'D's -- Deism, Darwinism, and DailyKos.

Are you an 'Ordinary American'?

I'm not.

Only the Beginning

Of course this is just a miniscule sampling of what defines 'Ordinary Americans' and 'Unordinary Americans'. What else do you think might fit Bush's definitions?

If you believe Dick Cheney would be a great guy to go hunting with, you might be an ordinary American.
