Are Republicans Reaping the Whirlwind? Email Print

Surely the far right Republicans who have dominated so much of this Republican-dominated Administration know the Biblical admonition that if you "sew to the wind, you will reap the whirlwind."

In almost every area where they have had voting power they have "sown to the wind".  They rushed to war when the war machine went into high gear with forged documents and lying advisors providing false information about Saddam's "weapons of mass destruction".  A series of generals who totally miscalculated what the cost of going into the Iraq War would cost.

They apparently had no idea how resistant the Iraqis would be to taking over.  Perhaps the U.S. track record of its conduct in the Middle East had taught them a lesson regarding letting Americans control their destinies.

It was the much-heralded Republican Ronald Reagan, a so-called "foreign policy expert", who left office with the scorching scandal of the Iran Contra arms deals, breaking international law.  The notorious Oliver North dared to run for office and we can thank God that Nancy Reagan stepped in with the voice of reason, cautioning Virginia voters against voting for North.

North carries on by doing talk shows and interviews, as if he had one shred of trustworthiness.  The Gulf War did not have to happen.  Apparently the U.S. foreign policy experts, along with the war machine mentality, were salivating to do some weapons testing.

Lest we forget, the Gulf War began when Kuwait slant-drilled, stealing Iraqi oil.  When the high and mighty in the U.S. were asked if we would object if Saddam invaded Kuwait to right this theft, the U.S. foreign affairs experts declared, "This is an Arab-Arab problem".

This was just a gimmick reply to make Saddam Hussein think we would not intervene.  When he did intervene we could proceed with our weapons testing program under the auspices of the then president, the elder George Bush.  Some nations saw through his hastily constructed political charade.

When a warmonger is on the loose with all those wonderful weapons of the much-heralded mightiest power on earth then watch out!  We never did find out exactly how many Iraqis were killed in this needless conflict.

As Colin Powell then explained at the time, we were not eager to find out.  The figure was unimportant!  Russia pleaded for more time to try and stop Saddam's Kuwaiti invasion.

Like father like son, the current George Bush wouldn't wait.  Bush got his Iraq War wish.  How dramatic it was when this Bush stepped up to the podium to announce to the world that the U.S. was going to fight Saddam and free Iraq.

The cohorts in this fiendish little plot carried on dramatically about spreading democracy and freedom all over the Middle East.  We had to defend ourselves against a nation that posed no direct and immediate threat to our security.  Certain gullible Americans accepted this snake oil with prayers for victory, freedom and democracy.

Was this really a rush to war to grab Iraq's lucrative oil assets?  Many believe that this was obviously the case.

Did it ever cross the consciousness of George Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle or Donald Rumsfeld that when you launched the so-called preventive war strike you prompted survival fears throughout the world?

Had the U.S. lost its traditional fame as a freedom-loving nation that believed in democracy?  Had the U.S. become the victim of warmongers controlling U.S. foreign policy whose primary goal is power, awesome power to strike any nation standing in the way of its grandiose imperial designs?

Now with a staggering national debt approaching $10 trillion with our dollar having been greatly lowered in value around the world, what has happened?  The citizens of the U.S. have been betrayed repeatedly when big corporations hired cheap immigrant labor with U.S. taxpayers subsidizing big business, paying for the education, health care and welfare for such poorly paid immigrant employees.

The greed of major oil companies almost bankrupted California with sky-high utility costs.  The employers who engineered this debacle paid themselves huge salaries and golden parachutes when they retired or moved from one corporate penthouse suite to another.

Now oil prices zoom.  Hospital costs skyrocket.  The Administration's "leader" suggested that perhaps it was now time to buy smaller autos.  Will he ask Arnold the Groper in California to get rid of his fleet of Hummers?

What about the greenhouse gases and climate change?  Forget all that.  We can't afford to stop the pollution causing those greenhouse gases that are destroying our planet with hurricanes, floods, and by melting icecaps.

The brain trust in charge isn't going to allow him to spend his time attending climate control conferences.  He is instead kept busy cutting weeds on his Crawford, Texas ranch.   With funds to the poor cut due to the Iraq War and tax cuts for the rich while Medicare is cut to the bone, those citizens not in the ranks of the Bush corporate elite wonder what misfortune will befall them next. With the Bush autocrats leading the way average Americans cringe over what future destruction might ensue. Will future generations rebel at paying off the national debt? Will the high costs of real estate, generated by demolishing the dollar with the lowest interest rates in 60 years, make millions of young people unable to realize the American dream of owning their own home? Will there be more hurricanes like Katrina and Wilma? Will there be a persistent and stubborn unwillingness to control pollution? Where will it all end? Maybe it will end where it all began. George Bush began consulting his “other father” for guidance to get out of the debacle he got this nation into. If anybody listens to that song and dance again, they deserve whatever dire fate awaits them. They earned it! The Republicans had their dance of death days. Now let’s think of peaceful negotiations instead of carrying on with this “freedom of democracy” charade. We’ve had enough of that!

One's political cortex does spin, doesn't it? The powers that be have driven our collective bus into a very deep ditch. We desperately need a new driver. Sigh.

Great piece, Mr. Kendall.
