Common Sense Solutions: Love Your Neighbor, Feed your Enemy, and Stop Wasting our Money. Email Print

Gay Marriage: The sensible solution to this issue is for the Federal government to stay out of it. The states should provide full legal rights to gay couples in a committed relationship, but it need not be called "marriage". Civil union should be an equivalent legal bond between these individuals. Churches, of course, can continue to define marriage as a "sacrament" uniting a man and woman.  The government should actually define a committed relationship between opposite sexes as a civil union as well...and leave the religious argument about marriage to the churches to decide!

Immigration:  Why is it the illegal immigrants are needed to take jobs that "no American would want to do". What is  it about these jobs that puts them in this category?  Low pay, no benefits, no security, no employer responsibility, long hours, poor working conditions? Of course we need to import a slave labor work force from a third-world country! Do not build a fence, but address the root cause of the problem. Feed your enemy! Send aid to Mexico.

War in Iraq: A brutal regime has been eliminated after invading a sovereign nation under false pretenses. No doubt we are all happy to see Saddam out of power. We are not about to invade every other country on earth unfortunate enough to be ruled by an oppressive dictator. Even if we think they have weapons-of-mass-destruction . Iraq will need to establish its own equilibrium. The United States cannot maintain control for long. Let us withdraw, let us study the politics and the will of the Islamic world. Let us help them establish their autonomy.

Terrorism: One cannot declare war against an "ism". One does not know the precise location of the "ism", making the targeting of cruise missiles extremely difficult. An inappropiratly high slice of our nations resources pie chart has been spent to provide security against a threat that has been vastly overstated. Granted, it is possible that some illegal organization may aquire a warhead or a dirty bomb...and this needs to be addressed by our security forces...but our leaders should work on the risk assessment side of the problem. The cost of this "war" far exceeds the risk to our people. If similar resources were spent to stop the use of tobacco, and prevent drunk driving, we would have already saved far more American lives than has the "War on Terror".

Republicans: Take a Republican to lunch and offer to pick up the check. Find out what issues are causing them to act irrationally. They are probably really angry about something...maybe you can help them find a better way to help them deal with their problems.
