I suppose it was inevitable that such a mindset would become prevalent in our politics. I just didn't think it would be a Democrat who'd give voice to it.

That "voice" comes from this story via ThinkProgress: apparently, Democratic Congressman Lincoln Davis doesn't think the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage go far enough.

...Mr. Speaker, I personally think child abuse may be the most despicable act one can commit. This is why if we are truly serious about protecting marriage to the point we will amend the constitution, we should extend the punishment of abuse to prevent those who do such a hideous act from ever running for an elected position anywhere.

We should also prevent those who commit adultery, or get a divorce, from running for office. Mr. Speaker, this House must lead by example. If we want those watching on CSPAN to actually believe we are serious about protecting marriage, then we should go after the other major threats to the institution. Not just the threat that homosexuals may some day be allowed to marry in a state other than Massachusetts. An elected official should certainly lead by example.

I'd applaud the Congressman for his satire, if it was satire. But I don't think it was. Assuming it's not, that means we as Democrats are going to be asking some hard questions between now and November.

One being: Do we want a Democrat in office over a Republican, even if that Democrat is more conservative? Assuming that Davis was being sincere, is a person like him still better than the alternative?

The next question assumes Davis is playing everyone for a fool: is this, moving towards the right (even in jest) to pander to the audience the best strategy for winning? If so, do we still want to vote for candidates like this: actors and posers who make the public at large beleive they have one political philosophy yet believe in the opposite? How can anyone trust such a person?

I don't know the answer to either. Part of me hopes that Davis was having a Colbert moment, but I know very little about him (anyone from TN wanna help me out here?) so I can't be sure.

I just don't see Democrats beating Republicans by being them or embracing their policies like a warm blanket. Isn't that why Lieberman is having so much trouble?

I'm curious to see how Republicans will react to Davis' statements. Regardless of the outcome, if they are true to their word about "defending marriage," they should welcome this idea with open arms.
