Political Cortex: Brain Food for the Body Politic

1.  Dave Mejias is a well-known, well-liked, and experienced State Legislator.

2.  He shocked political professionals by raising just over $200,000 in only five weeks.

3.  Charlie Cook has moved Mejias's race against King from "solid Republican" to "leans Republican," which shocked everyone who thought this seat wold be safe for King.

4.  Mejias has picked up the AFL-CIO endorsement, which King has inexplicably received in past years, despite advocating policies hostile to working Americans.  The AFL-CIO thinks this is a race that can be won.

5.  Chuck Todd has listed the Mejias-King race as the 45th most likely House race to switch from the "R" to the "D" column.

6.  Considering how strong New York Dems are at the top of the ticket this cycle, with Clinton amd Spitzer leading the charge, we have a good opportunity to pick off some races lower down on the ticket, especially considering how unpopular Bush and the Republicans are in New York.

7.  New York's Third District in Long Island is rapidly trending blue.  Peter King is by all measures a CONSERVATIVE Republican, and a Bush loyalist, and therefore is completely out of step with his district.

8.  King is one of those "national" Republicans who appears on Fox News all the time saying outrageously provacative things about Democrats and anyone who opposes Bush's atrocious policies on Iraq.  Putting him on the defensive in his district will cause him to moderate his tone, because Bush is extremely unpopular on Long Island.  Moreover, it will tie him down locally so he can't fundraise for other candidates.  (As head of the Homeland Security committee in the House, King is a fundraising draw for lobbyists).
