Highway to Hell? Is Armageddon Next? Email Print

In the film "To Kill a Mockingbird," Atticus Finch says, "You never really understand a person until ... you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

When the Palestinian people were driven from what had been their home for centuries, approximately a quarter of a million of them resettled in Southern Lebanon.  Ex-President Jimmy Carter's book "The Blood of Abraham" said a mouthful with its title.  The Israelis and Arabs are blood brothers.  The Israeli-Arab conflict might be labeled "a family feud" as they are indeed blood brothers, lest they forget.

To absorb the displaced Palestinians was not an easy task, and what made it all the more difficult is that in Jerusalem both Arabs and Jews had religious sites they considered equally sacred.

This famous family feud began to extend far beyond the borders of the Middle East.  At one strategic point along this path to ousting Palestinians was the challenge to avoid an all-out war to create Israel, as a fulfillment to some Jews of what they claim is a biblical prophecy.

The U.N. Mandate was for two nations, Palestine and Israel, to live side by side.  Tragically, their peaceful plan was hastily cast aside.  Israel went to war to create the state of Israel.  Arabs and Jews quickly offer different accounts of what happened next.

Approximately one million Arabs remained in the state of Israel, and still remain there.  However, Jordan absorbed a large number of Palestinians.  A large number of Palestinians were also absorbed into Southern Lebanon.  Their living area comprised   what is termed refugee camps.

As Palestinians in Jordan and Southern Lebanon observed what has been happening in the Palestinian Gaza area, with years of Israeli occupation, they are not eager to return to what they still consider their rightful homeland.

The Israelis, with powerful backers in the U.S. Government, have felt secure for years.  U.S. funding, along with the latest in U.S. weapon power and "cluster bombs" invested them with a great sense of security.

In the long run, however, through the advent of historical events, and with their latest attempt to destroy Hezbollah operations in Lebanon, they have finally awakened to a new reality.

Hezbollah has provided schools, hospitals, food, and water to the Palestinians in the refugee camps of Southern Lebanon.  Israel's public relations campaigners felt that to use the label "terrorist" was all that was required to prompt feelings of hatred and fear.

What they did not calculate is those who have always opposed the extence of the state of Israel on the modern scene have applied the word "terrorist" to Israel for years by those who have always opposed the existence of the state of Israel on the modern scene.

The idea of Israeli leadership has been to occupy any area where a Palestinian leader lives and use the word "defending" to cover a series of assassinations and attempted assassinations they embarked upon.

In the Gaza area homes of anyone Israeli leaders felt threatened them were demolished.  In Israel itself clashes with religious extremists who have been attempting to follow the ancient traditions of closing every business on what they call the Sabbath takes place.

Certain Orthodox Jews do not have to serve in the Israeli military and are funded by the state of Israel in what could be called welfare money so they can study the Torah, which they consider sacred.

Palestinians who want to fight back have done it by sacrificing their own lives in suicide bombings.  This kind of warfare by also engaged in by Japanese kamikaze pilots in World War Two.

When Hezbollah provided schools, hospitals, food, and water to displaced Palestinians, they were understandably accepted and appreciated by refugee camp inhabitants the world had almost forgotten.  Silently Hezbollah had built up a military side as well as a social and political arm.

When Hezbollah kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers they were hastily labeled terrorists by Israel as it launched a war not built on this single provocation, but on something they had been planning for years.

When the Israelis kidnapped some of Hamas' government leaders, if it was thought that they had not fully accepted Israel's existence, they would not classify such acts as kidnapping but for public relations reasons labeling it an act of self-defense to kidnap a democratically elected government official.  Who is kidding whom?

As Israel used the U.S. supplied planes and cluster bombs they bombed the hell out of Lebanon with none other than George Bush and Condoleezza Rice giving Israel the green light as the world watched in horror and disgust.  How ignorant, how arrogant, how ruthless, how stupid can these leaders be?

Didn't they realize killing 1,000 or thereabouts of Lebanese, men, women, and children is an act of criminal warfare any way you try to explain it.  Hasn't there been enough death and destruction in the unnecessary Iraq war to satisfy the most bloodthirsty?

Bob Kendall provides in a few lines one of the most completely erroneous accountings of the conflict between Jews and Arabs that I've ever read.

An even cursory review of the history of how that conflict began with would tell you that as of the declaration of independence on May 14, 1948 the infant state of Israel was immediately attacked by militaries from Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq. Israel did indeed go to war. A war of survival that has continued with cease fires since that time.

It may be that a lot of people have forgotten the lessons of what lead up to WW II, but some of us do remember that you cannot negotiate with terrorists no matter what sort of uniform they wear and which gods they honor.

Mr. Kendall needs to get his facts straight before he writes about the problem of Israel and the Arab states. The fact is that if you disarm the Arabs and in particular the terrorist organizations of various jihads, Hezbollah, Hamas and the rest of them, the violence would end immediately. If you disarmed the Israelis, Israel would be destroyed and the Jewish population systematically exterminated finishing what the German Fascists started and the Islamofascists want to finish.

Do none of the liberals read what the Islamic religious lunatics write? Is everyone so deluded by their own liberalism that the do not realize that there are millions who would destroy the liberals and the Jews in the same sweeping destruction - to say nothing of everyone who isn't a Muslim?? Get real.
