Media Snake Oil: Horowitz's Latest Target -- George Soros Email Print

If there is one person you can count on for clockwork reliability, it is David Horowitz, the guy who "repented" from his earlier radical left youth phase to find the kind of endruing peace and harmony that only the world of the political right can truly know and experience.

When we last focused on Horowitz in this column he had an ambitious project commensurate with his career fixation of ridding society of those who dare to hold a different view than the Cheney-Bush-Coulter-Fox News Axis of Supreme Wisdom and Grand Patriotism.  In the best tradition of Joseph McCarthy and Richard Nixon, Horowitz is never content unless he is engaged in some form of witch-hunt.

Horowitz's website has been dedicated to the fundamental purpose of exposing any college or university professors who hold a different view from the current Likud Party of Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Olmert, along with their American brethren of the neoconservative movement such as Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Newt Gingrich, and Tom DeLay.

Neocons proudly refer to the Likud Party as "the Republican Party of Israel."

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect, and Horowitz, having sharpened his skills pursuing professors who engaged in the unforgivable practice of espousing views he held repugnant, decided to move on to a larger battlefield.  He quickly turned out a book exposing America's "radical professors."

Naturally the tepid centrist Horowitz with his extensive background of tolerance made himself the official judge and jury determining what constitutes patriotic Americanism as well as what defines intolerable radicalism, from which he seeks to save U.S. college students.

There were those of us unkind enough to deny Horowitz sole authority to define what is radical and what is not, particularly in view of his track record.  Horowitz would have felt at home in the post-revolutionary fervor of eighteenth century France, when the new regime insisted that everyone refer to each other as "Citizen."

The new regime instituted a Committee of Public Safety to determine the difference between friend and foe where the government was concerned.  If Dick Cheney ever decides that America needs a Committee of Public Safety then David Horowitz would appear to be the ideal American to head it, just as he would also have made an ideal overseer at Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay.

A man in perpetual need of a challenge, Horowitz has unfurled his lance and directed it at a new target - George Soros.  Horowitz along with co-author Richard Poe charge that Soros as a 14-year-old boy in was a Nazi "collaborator in fascist Hungary" and "survived (the Holocaust) by assimilating to Nazism" during that turbulent period.

The unsourced smearing of Soros as a Nazi collaborator follows on the heels of a similar effort launched by Lyndon LaRouche.  It is a recycling of old attacks from the Richard Mellon Scaife-financed extreme right wing website, FrontpageMag.com.

What obviously enrages Horowitz along with the Scaife-Reverend Moon loony land funding apparatus is how Soros sees fit to spend some of his fortune.

Soros operates as a progressive humanitarian trying to save the world from the role that the Horowitz-Scaife-Moonie Loonies believe America is meant to play of launching more neocon military attacks and suffocating more of the world's citizenry through the suffocating glut of economic globalization.

The right wing hate machine had reason to loudly lament the disaffection from their ranks by David Brock.  As one who learned firsthand through on the job experience just how the mendacious attack apparatus operates, Brock's bulldog instincts are trained to comprehend and respond to visceral assaults devoid of reason.

Brock's excellent and informative website, MediaMatters.org, pounced on the latest Horowitz screed and unearthed a hate trail traversed by a list of the usual suspects, the journalists and Internet bloggers who generate fires from lit matches by coalescing and fanning each other's flames.  In reference to the Horowitz-Poe collaboration, David Brock and Simon Maloy paid the following tribute:

"The job is so thoughtlessly cut-and-pasted that a glaring error from the ProntPageMag.com series - a reference to a non-existent major progressive donor `Peter Bing' - is duplicated in the book he is referred to correctly as Stephen Bing."

Come to think of it, the Media Matters review carries a comparable ring to the one that Horowitz's last witch-hunt tirade on college professors received from this source.  So Horowitz can find a ray of sunshine in that this column site as well as Media Matters credits Horowitz with consistency.

The former self-proclaimed left wing radical David Horowitz turned to the right in search of freedom.  His brand of freedom is more akin to license; specifically license to smear with impunity, with wealthy hate merchant Scaife more than happy to fund his efforts.

It is time to end with a suggestion.  How about Scaife, Horowitz, Coulter, Savage, Michelle Malkin, and the proud and assertive minions of Front Page Magazine, World Net Daily, Power Line, and Free Republic jumping en masse into an expansive mud pit and indulging themselves?

for the kind and thoughtful response pertaining to my article.  I can agree that trying to put an appropriate label on the individuals and conduct of this shabby group calling themselves neoconservatives is a challenge.  We can supply different perjorative labels, but when all is said and done we must unite to turn back the forces of injustice they represent as they seek to turn America and the world upside down in their own depraved image.
