NY-03: Peter King is an Asshole! (Episode 12) Email Print

When I started doing this "Peter King is an Asshole" series, I was worried it would be difficult to keep coming up with good material, day after day after day.  Fortunately, Peter King is the gift that keeps on giving.  Today, King again flexed his "asshole bonafides" by drafting legislation that hurts first responders (like police and firefighters!), charged with fighting terrorism.

King has often pretended he cared about fighting terrorism by advocating such policies as throwing the editors of the New York Times in prison and racially profiling muslims in airports.  Today, however, he shows that those stands were nothing but demagoguery.  Peter King, charged with the critically important task of overhauling FEMA, has voted to deny State and local first responders critical funds for their communications equipment, the very equipment that failed so spectacularly on 9/11, and failed again during Hurricane Katrina:

The agreement on a FEMA overhaul plan also has not calmed the rancor between House Homeland Security Chairman Peter King, R-N.Y., and ranking member Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., over the issue of funding to help ensure that first responders can communicate with each other in an emergency. Thompson wants to provide $3.1 billion in additional funding to state and local governments for interoperable communications, but that funding was left out of the final agreement.

"By refusing to provide desperately needed funds for interoperable communications, House Republicans and the White House have shamefully sold out our nation's first responders in an effort to score political points just weeks before the upcoming election," Thompson said.

Aides to Thompson said they raised the issue of providing $3.1 billion with King's staff before Labor Day. In one communication to King's aides before Labor Day, which was reviewed by CongressDaily, a Thompson aide mentioned the funding amount. Thompson aides added that Thompson's participation in the negotiations for overhauling FEMA was based on trying to get the $3.1 billion.

"The 9/11 Commission says that we absolutely must have interoperability," Thompson said in a statement Monday. "As a former firefighter, I'm with the first responders and the commissioners on this one. I'll leave the political game playing to Mr. King this season."

Peter King says he cares about fighting terrorism, but when it comes to putting his money where his mouth is, he clearly doesn't have the stomach for the fight.  He'd rather act like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter and demagogue on hot-button social issues than do anything real.

Fortunately, Peter King has a serious opponent who could take him down, with prejudice, this election cycle.  The DCCC has just added NY-03 to its list of emerging races that it plans to fund and support.  This competitiveness, which stunned those who are used to watching King sleepwalk to victory, is no doubt due to the impressive skills of the Democratic challenger, Dave Mejias.    As the Wall Street Journal recently reported:

Peter King, long considered safe, [was] recently added to nonpartisan analyst Stuart Rothenberg's watch list partly due to the credibility of his Democratic challenger, state legislator Dave Mejias.

Let's kick this asshole, Peter King, out of office.  Contribute to Dave Mejias's Actblue fund today, and help bring Dave one step closer to victory.
