Chavez Smells A Sulfurous Bush Email Print

President Hugo Chavez made an important and constructive speech at the UN. The US corporate media is now busily casting his address as "Extremist in Nature". President Bush also made a UN speech in which he presented such a distorted view of the world's condition that one must truly question his sanity. Chavez received 5 minutes of sustained applause; Bush got brief but polite ovation.

Chavez smelled sulfur when he reached the podium and suggested that Bush spoke as if he were the Devil himself. During his diabolic impersonation, Bush made sulfur smell like roses, civil war in Iraq look like "Democracy on the March", and the continued use of torture and rendition appear as support for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Bush regretted the Lebanese communities recently "caught in the crossfire". (In truth many of the 1300 civilians that were killed were women and children bombed to bits while in their beds.) Chavez quickly pointed out that the Israeli bombing of a defenseless South Beirut with "millimetric precision" was not the equivalent of characters in some Western shooting from the hip.

Chavez said the US government doesn't want peace; it wants to continue its system of exploitation, of pillage and of hegemony through war and asked what type of democracy has ever been imposed with marines and bombs? He proposed to reform the Security Council to eliminate the veto power of the five permanent members and to allow real participation by developing countries in the important policy decisions. He suggested that the Secretary General be given more power, and that UN headquarters be moved out of New York.

We ought to consider carefully President Chavez' proposals rather than allow our media to dismiss him as a fool.
