Political Cortex: Brain Food for the Body Politic

Congressman Peter King, a Republican from New York, called the movie "absolutely disgraceful" and suggested that "it could incite real violence". Far be it for me to minimise King's concerns but they would carry more weight if they did not come from the mouth of a man who spent decades sympathising with and excusing the actions of the IRA - an organisation that really did try to murder Margaret Thatcher and John Major, among many others.

Now, not personally knowing much about this film, I think it sounds pretty stupid.  However, it hardly sounds important enough that a U.S. Congressman should be spending time on it, as opposed to working hard on the issues that actually matter to his constituents, which, in Peter King's case, are the people of Nassau and Suffolk County on Long Island, New York.

Fortunately, in 2006, Peter King has a challenger who has worked on the ground for the people of New York's Third District and understands that they are more concerned with rising gas prices than they are with some obscure indie film from Canada.  That challenger is Dave Mejias, and he is making a real run against King.  

Mejias has shocked everyone with his fundraising prowess, and has picked up the AFL-CIO endorsement, which King has inexplicably received in past years, despite advocating policies hostile to the middle class.  The AFL-CIO thinks this is a race that can be won.  Moreover, Charlie Cook, recognizing these trends, has just moved the race from the "Solid Republican" column to "Leans Republican," a move which stunned the political establishment.

It's time we kicked Peter King out of Congress, so he can get a talk show on AM radio following Rush Limbaugh, where he belongs.  Help Dave Mejias by contributing to his campaign here.
