Can President do what he wants if he thinks Congress has voted the wrong way? Email Print

OK - I'm now officially at the end of my rope. Tony Snow, during a White House press briefing, when asked about Congress pulling the plug on funding for the president's "surge" said the following:

"The President has the ability to exercise his own authority if he thinks Congress has voted the wrong way."

Say WHAT???????????

First of all, what does "Congress votes the wrong way" mean? Congress represents the people of the United States. The Constitution says that Congress MAKES the law and has the power of the purse. The president's job is to EXECUTE the law as the "executive."

Yes - sometimes Congress passes STUPID laws. Yes - the president has the power to VETO a law. But Congress can OVERRIDE that veto and if something truly is the will of the Congress, enough members will vote to override.

So what the heck is Tony Snow talking about.

I'm about to move away from my keyboard and move over to the phone to call the White House. Something I've rarely done. I'm going to call and ask a simple question.

"What did Tony Snow mean when he said that "The President has the ability to exercise his own authority if he thinks Congress has voted the wrong way?"

Let's all call the White House and ask that question, shall we?

Thanks for highlighting this absurdity, and for providing the number to call. Even impeachment seems an inadequate response to blatant and repeated attacks on the Constitution.  Each of us must make a personal effort to make clear that We The People won't stand for this.
