The Impeachment Chronicles: Hagel Mentions That Dreaded "Impeachment" Word Email Print

In a recent Esquire interview Senator Chuck Hagel mentioned a word that is truly forbidden in the Republican lexicon.  The Nebraska Republican addressed a theme that has been frequently discussed in this column.

With reference to George W. Bush, Hagel mentioned the numerous recent occasions when the White House resident has engaged in actions called "unaccountable."  Senator Hagel mentioned that this word was used in frequent reference to the Iraq War, according to which, based on all current national polls, the majority of Americans oppose.

Hagel then took another forward step that has also been frequently addressed here, but is considered anathema for a Capitol Hill Republican to think, much less express.  The Nebraska Senator noted that Bush could be held accountable through impeachment.

As the Founding Fathers framed it, there is that constitutional protection in response to executive action discerned to encompass "high crimes and misdemeanors."  Hagel stopped short of advocating impeachment, but stated that this is an action that might well be considered should Bush continue on the same course.

This is strong commentary coming from a Republican and must be welcomed as good news in the fight for justice in the wake of an executive following the maxim of Napoleon that all power resides in the head of state.  An unelected head of state herein asserts himself as the face of unchallenged supremacy.

Jack Cafferty, one of the few members of the mainstream media willing to talk about the issues that others conveniently sweep under the rug, mentioned Hagel's statement today on CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.

Cafferty wisely noted that Hagel, while considering a presidential run, has been a critic of the Iraq War for some time.  His statement therefore should not be construed as political opportunism of a candidate jockeying for prime position in the Republican field.

So there you have it, Democrats.  Hagel stated the case with cogent persuasiveness.  Will you now step forward and do what the Constitution mandates in cases where the nation's executive has run amok?  Will one of you introduce articles of impeachment?
