The Impeachment Chronicles: Where is the Black Caucus?

Two points have been consistently made in this column concerning impeachment: 1) the act was designed to correct executive tyranny through the commission of "high crimes and misdemeanors" and it is therefore essential for Members of Congress to take such a step in the interest of preserving the Constitution; 2) once that a conscientious investigation has been conducted in this area there will be a strong outpouring of public opinion calling for removal of Cheney and Bush from office.
A sturdy bulwark in the fight for justice at home and abroad has been the Black Caucus. It will be recalled that Congresswoman Barbara Lee of California rose in opposition to the Patriot Act when fellow members of both parties, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
While others endorsed the Patriot Act without either reading it or taking note of far-reaching provisions that could and eventually would through their application trample basic freedoms and liberties of American citizens, Barbara Lee stood up and announced her opposition due to an unswerving devotion to the U.S. Constitution and its principles.
The conduct of Lee and Conyers represented standing tall against corporate media pressures to let the status quo prevail, which in those instances meant seeking safety in the face of lawless turmoil. A well-financed and stoutly determined neocon regime was seeking to apply a gigantic boot to democracy. Lee and Conyers were among an all too small minority who stood up steadfastly for constitutional principle.
The Congressional Caucus has been the foremost political link toward registering voters in the African American community along with helping mount successful get out the vote drives to make an impact.
The Bush regimes in both Texas and Florida recognized the power represented by African Americans going to the polls as the 2000 presidential election dawned. Younger brother Jeb Bush of Florida assisted then Governor Bush of Texas as the state's voting rolls were scrubbed of large numbers of African American voters.
After Secretary of State Katherine Harris was able to complete this shameful mission she was saluted as a conquering heroine at the black tie balls featuring the giants of corporate America during the Bush inaugural gala season in Washington.
Due to the Bush team's low jinks victory was snatched from the jaws of defeat in Florida and with it the White House for the neocons with Halliburton's star CEO Dick Cheney positioned to push the right buttons, starting with an invasion of Iraq.
Four years later a Republican team not strong enough in voter approval to secure a legitimate election victory at the polls engaged in widespread fraud, much of which was centered on Ohio.
Making the odor of the corruption all the more fetid was the fact that this time an African American, Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, was the centerpiece of the corruption strategy designed to repel efforts of African Americans to vote and insure that the Cheney-Bush neocon regime remain in power.
Congressman John Conyers saw corruption for what it was and his report documenting the Ohio tragedy is a masterpiece of insight exposing the insidious work of Republican strategists intent on repelling democracy in the interest of electoral gain.
In the last two presidential elections it was African American citizens who, in appallingly alarming numbers, were denied the right to vote. This is hardly opinion at this point. It is a factual assertion grounded in solid evidence.
Members of the Black Caucus are keenly aware of how a lawless regime achieved power as well as the ruthless manner in which they retained it.
In consideration of the foregoing it is time for the Black Caucus to steadfastly assert its might on behalf of Congressman Kucinich's ongoing impeachment effort.
