Media Out To Get Al Gore For The Assault On Reason Email Print

Remember this media talking point now: Al Gore only wrote The Assault On Reason as a precursor to a presidential run, not as the intelligent cogent argument of a statesman for the rule of reason. Right. This from a man who has totally excoriated the political process in this country and shown the media for the corporate propaganda arm of the government that it is. Oh yes, this is definitely the work of a man who wants to get back in that muck himself and is only pulling the wool over our eyes with this book...Well, at least that is the way it is depicted by those so far interviewing Al Gore regarding his new book, The Assault On Reason, and I see it as a deliberate attempt to divert discussion from the truth in the book and it seems many are also taking the bait.

I see it taking shape already. Just from his interview on ABC with Diane Sawyer and then last night with Larry King, it is obvious the media is now out to get him for the truth he speaks in The Assault On Reason. The ABC interview was a waste of time as Diane Sawyer was ignorant, arrogant, and downright harrassing to the man. He even had to make the point that she was following exactly the modus operandi of his book by asking, "see the questions you are asking?", and that being a candidate is not what this book is about as they showed his interview next to a "campaign 08" sign and had the nerve to show pictures of him and make comments about his weight.

Then last night on Larry King, I was disappointed in that the true meaning of this book was totally dissed by Larry King in favor of simply trying to trap Mr. Gore into talking about nothing but politics. And that "King Cam" was not random in my view, and even Mr. Gore knew that by asking if it was. His facial expressions and mannerisms spoke volumes about how uncomfortable he is now talking about politics except in discussing it in regards to how it needs to be changed through grassroots action which wasn't even touched upon and which is exactly what he is now doing. And I believe he was truly hoping to delve deeper into the true link between the demise of Democracy and our environment as well and how they are linked, but hounding him about 08 again as the only banner going across the screen the entire interview was for the umpteenth time, "Will Gore Run For President?" which seems to be what the people want to dish about as opposed to actually making them think was considered the priority. Not, "Can this Democracy be saved?", or, "Will the people find their collective moral compass and stand up together as our Founders did?" Just the same old redundant spiel.

I did however, appreciate Mr. Gore's remarks on New Orleans because it is a downright DISGRACE that 21 months after Hurricane Katrina many areas STILL LOOK THE SAME with a forecast for this hurricane season that casts in doubt once again the ability of the levees to hold should another one of even a number three magnitude strike again. However, this does not seem to illicit broad outrage anymore, which again goes back to his book. I also appreciated the comments he did get to make about our Founding Fathers and the current lack of intellect on matters of reason that has been supplanted by Britney Spear's haircut, Lindsay Lohan or whoever in rehab, "Brangelina," or now the big new story, why Joey Buttafuoco is back with Amy Fisher. Like I give a damn about that over the global water crisis and how this Earth is now deteriorating as I type this.

Oh, but that isn't as important as harrassing a good man who has done all of this simply because he cares about this country and this planet and wants to wake us up to do what he has done. Let's just continue to depict him as a prevaricating calculating politician just writing this book for revenge and to muscle in on the political turf, even after him stating that all the candidates including Hillary Clinton were good candidates and that he would probably be endorsing someone. Let's not really discuss the core issues that we should be discussing, because hey, that's hard work, and like the climate crisis that would mean that certain people would then actually have to take moral responsibility for what has transpired in this country due to their recklessness, complacency, and indifference. And besides, it's more fun to stand in front of a book store waving a banner that says, "Run Al run" than it is to talk about the actual topic of a book that seems to escape many.

And of course, after spending the entire hour hedging, Larry King waits until there was what, 20 seconds left to mention Live Earth in passing? I don't know, perhaps when Al Gore speaks about his book in NY tomorrow with Charlie Rose he will get taken seriously with a more intelligent interview where he can expound on the merits of the Democracy crisis without all of the added corporate media political hype. I actually enjoyed his interview with Charlie Rose last June very much, as he actually asked questions that relayed to An Inconvenient Truth and the climate crisis. Maybe there is still hope to get the essence of this discussion out into the public without so many distractions.

All I know is that up to this point the corporate media coverage has only served to illustrate very aptly the true deterioration of Democratic dialogue and principles in this country, and a people that to me for the most part are just not into active self-government anymore, and that is indeed dangerous, especially considering what we allowed to slip through the back door seven years ago.

And what he is doing now is being the voice of reason and conscience we need, and those of us who see that big picture must not allow that message to get lost in all of the noise coming from both sides. Thank you for your comment.

Your comment: "And besides, it's more fun to stand in front of a book store waving a banner that says, "Run Al run" than it is to talk about the actual topic of a book that seems to escape many," deeply disturbs me.

I believe strongly in the messages found in Assault on Reason and Inconvenient Truth. These are two of the most important books of our time.  But I don't believe, as you seem to, that the message will somehow be lost or diminished if Al Gore decides to run for President.

Yep, that was me standing in front of the book signing with my Gore 2008 t-shirt on.  That was me on Tuesday having Al Gore sign my copy of Assault on Reason.  And, yes, that was Al telling me how much he liked our t-shirts and thanking us for our support.

If, and when, he issues a Sherman statement the draft movement will be history. Only he can make that determination. Would it be an immense sacrifice for Al Gore to run for or be President?  Yes.  Am I selfish for wanting him to run?  Yes.  Do I think he can be President and still make a difference?  You bet!

This obsession the corporate media and those who do nothing but wave pom poms have which feeds right into their rhetoric and attempts to discredit his motivations disturbs me. The man has stated a million times that he has no plans, is not thinking of it, and has committed himself to a campaign for our planet. It then disturbs me that for all of the talk about supporting him, these cheerleading groups seem to think the important work he is now doing for this planet isn't good enough. I have faith in him that he knows full well what he is doing and will follow his heart. So to me it is a shame that some don't seem to have the same fervor for supporting his inititatives to save this planet as they do in being involved with a meet up that only accomplishes soothing their own egos.

This crisis is bigger than any presidency to him right now and he wants to do everything possible to wake people up to DRAFT THEMSELVES into being the change. There is no more worthy, noble, or important goal for the sustainability of our planet than this, and I support him in that 100% and will continue to spend my time now taking action on this crisis.

You most certainly have the right to continue standing there and begging him to do it your way but again, that accomplishes nothing in the interim but the spinning of wheels, and regarding this crisis regarding both our planet and our democratic life time is of the essence.

The Washington Post has a discussion of Fred Thompson potentially running () ... a couple weeks ago, dedicated the top of the Outlook section to Thompson.  Is he the Post's candidate?

Well, related to your topic ... today in the Washinton Post, page A2, was a large article by political reporter Dana Milbank on Gore's George Washington University appearance last night:  Is it wise to be so smart?  This is focused on attacking Gore because he is too erudite, continuing the meme that being smart is not good for a politician seeking to be President.

Be Energy Smart for a Sustainable Future.
