This week I discuss the debates (briefly), Bush's veto, Ann Coulter, and the terrible malaise Bush has placed over the Republican Party. If you visit my blog, don't forget to click on an advertiser or two since that helps me keep the blog going. As usual I also highlight local events and organizations for several states. And, if you want more political and social discussions, please check out our offerings on Culture Kitchen.

Well we have had the first two primary debates. Many criticized the Democratic Debate's format, and felt that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were the clear frontrunners in that debate with Gravel being perhaps the star of the event, but not likely to pick up votes despite that. Edwards has an image issue going partly due to smears from Republicans and partly because he really needs to LOOK a bit more like his blue collar upbringing and less like a lawyer...no offense to lawyers out there, but if you are running as the son of a steelworker who wants to solve poverty, you need to make sure you look the part. And though many liked Gravel, none of the others distinguished themselves enough to compete with the top three. All in all, I think most people find the Democratic candidates pretty darned good overall. And I STILL can't decide who I support.

By contrast, the Republican Debate has been described as little more than an attempt to invoke the Zombie Reagan (not my term! saw it floating around the internet) and to duck blame on Iraq. I looked at right wing sites and found that they thought that Fred Thompson won...because he was the likely candidate who WASN'T there. The general consensus from the right is that McCain won by default but they all came off poorly.

This goes back to my "McCain and the Seven Dwarfs" diary where I hypothesize that the Republicans have squat to offer for 2008. Even the right wing websites like Red State seem to be underwhelmed by their candidates. I urge everyone to give a little donation here in honor of the Republican Debate...best way to deal with these losers is to make sure we beat them.
