I Thought Bush and Gonzales Got Rid of Them All... Email Print

...but there's still someone in the GOP who thinks attorneys should put the law before politics:

Add Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox to the list of Republicans taking hard shots at President George W. Bush.

Cox harshly criticized Bush on Wednesday for commuting the prison sentence of I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, saying the action sends the wrong message.

Cox said his years as a prosecutor in Wayne County prompted him to air his beliefs, in both a guest editorial in the Free Press and a phone interview.

"I spent 13 years as a prosecutor, and a number of those years I ran the homicide unit. I had people who testified who faced real threats. But we put them under oath anyway," Cox said. "Sometimes they didn't want to tell the truth, but they did what they were supposed to."

Wayne State University law school professor Peter Henning, a former federal prosecutor, said Cox's criticism if fair. "It doesn't make it harder to prosecute cases, but it makes it harder to overcome the perception that perjury isn't a serious crime or one that can be excused in certain circumstances," Henning said.

Guess he won't be invited to the White House anytime soon.
