Why is this Day Different From All Other Days? Email Print

This 4th of July is unique in American history.

It's on a Wednesday—a little unusual, granted. The New York Times even has an article about it. But what makes this 4th of July unique—infamous in fact—is that it is the first and only 4th of July to be celebrated just days after the President of the United States (and I use that term loosely) commuted his buddy Scooter Libby's sentence from 30 months in jail to just a fine and probation. The punishment was "excessive," in the opinion of Bush '43.

How far we have come from the day President Bush declared that anyone in his administration found to have whispered Valerie Plame's name and profession to the press would be held accountable! Bush, once again, has lied in plain sight. His word means nothing, nothing at all, except to his corporate pals. They can count on him, one-hundred percent.

We citizens, on the other hand, can only count on his consistently unethical behavior, his blatant practice of cronyism and his favoring self-interest over any public good. He is where he is today, in The People's White House, through the support and backing of his only true constituency, the transnational corporate states. Whether it be the war in Iraq or the devastation of New Orleans, they can count on him to tilt the game in their favor. Every economic blow to an American citizen has become a benefit to his fat cat friends.

This is truly a low point in America's history.

Isn't this all obvious?

This past Fourth of July, I thanked God for the privilege of living in a free country.

Unfortunately, however, the stranglehold which the transnational mega-corporations have over our country is tightening. The good news is that  Americans are gradually waking up to this reality.
