Will the Iraq War Cost Bankrupt the U.S.A.? Email Print

How much will the Iraq War cost the U.S. taxpayer?

On August 1, CNN reported the latest estimates of the cost of the Iraq War are $480 billion more, bringing the total Iraq War cost to $1 trillion.  The war costs $10 billion a month.

It was Paul Wolfowitz, joining with Bush, Cheney and Richard Perle, who engaged in such a rush to launch the Iraq War.  Paul Wolfowitz claimed that the Iraq oil revenue would pay for the cost of the war.

Of course, Wolfowitz was wrong.  The U.S. taxpayer is funding the Iraq War.  The oil contract the U.S. leadership wants calls for foreign investors to control 63 of Iraq's oil wells, leaving 17 under Iraqi control.

Under Saddam Hussein, Iraq's oil was nationalized.  While many Iraqis were glad to see Saddam go, they did not expect to see foreign investors control 63 of their 80 oil wells, which represent their most valuable assets.  Obviously Iraqis now think they have positive proof that the U.S. went to war in an "oil grab."

Polls taken in Iraq prove that the majority of Iraqis want us to go.

The Bush Administration could not allow the weapons inspectors in Iraq enough time to discover that the "weapons of mass destruction" fear campaign was a horrifying hoax.

It took a war with all its death, destruction and debt to present proof of the reason Bush launched his rush to the Iraq War.  If the UN weapons inspectors could have proven that the "weapons of mass destruction" fear campaign was 100 percent false the U.S. would have no reason under international law to go to war.

Anyone who questioned the rush to war was labeled as unpatriotic, taking a page out of the old Republican playbook from the Nixon-McCarthy era.  The adage of "If you fear the truth launch a smear" was in vogue.

Now what label can you apply to an Administration that went to war on a hoax?

When Hillary Clinton asked the Pentagon to let us know what our withdrawal plans are she was castigated for aiding the enemy for daring to ask such a question.  Were Nixon and McCarthy smiling from somewhere in the great beyond?

The fact is that the U.S. is not considering leaving Iraq.  Accordingly, why would the Pentagon have a plan on record for withdrawal?

The largest U.S. embassy in the world has been constructed in Iraq at a cost of $598 million.  Does that appear to be the act of a nation intending to withdraw from Iraq?

With over one-third of the world's oil supply sitting underneath the ground in Iraq, do career oil advocates Cheney and Bush appear to be ready to leave that nation?

What is the only feasible way to obtain action pertaining to withdrawal from Iraq?  It is called impeachment and the time for action is now!
