Progressive Democrat Newsletter Issue 129 Email Print

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. After much pressure from readers, this email newsletter is now going the blog route. I update the blog once a week focusing on both national issues and issues of interest to particular regions or states. In general, NYC, California, New Jersey, Virginia and the Midwest get special attention simply because those are the areas where I seem to have the most readers. However, these days I am too busy to give each region the attention I used to. As my readership on Daily Gotham and Culture Kitchen goes up, I have to spend more time on those sites. So this newsletter is fading a bit. I hope it is still usefull to you, though.

This week I talk about the Democrats not quite living up to our expectations on FISA and some of what we can do about it, present some chilling numbers from Iraq, discuss the neglect of America further, and bring up an issue too many people dance around: Republican Racism. Additionally I want to bring to your attention a Congressional race in New York (one close to my home and close to my heart, so please read about it and help us out!), the race for Mississippi Insurance Commissioner (happening THIS YEAR) and the New Hampshire Senate race.

There is some discontent among Democrats because of the FISA fiasco where some 57 Democrats sided with the Republicans against the Constitution. Disappointing! And I want to discuss that a bit with some solid suggestions on what to do about it.

Let's keep one fact firmly in mind before we discuss the Democrats: the erosion of American civil liberties, the destruction of our defining document, the Constitution, and the betrayal of our founding fathers' dream for America, has been led by Bush, the bulk of the Republican Party, and that Benidict Arnold, Joe Lieberman. Most of the blame for this crap is squarely on the Republicans.

Most...

But not all.

And therein is a massive problem for those of us who want to fight against the destruction of American democracy. We don't have too many choices in how to fight. As I recently outlined, the Republicans are actively attacking America's very foundations: the Constitution, our economy, our national security. Being an independent or Green or whatever other nobody flash in the pan is tantamount to having no role in how our nation is run whatsoever. Political insignificance, the path of the independent, the Libertarian, the Green, the apathetic...that is doing nothing but abandoning American democracy to destruction at the hands of the Republicans. Like it or not, that is what it is.

Which leaves us with the Democrats. And sadly, though, as I have proudly explained before, the Democrats CAN do great things, right now the Democrats have failed us.

But that isn't quite accurate, and it is critical to keep that in mind. It isn't the majority of Democrats who have failed us. It is some 57 SPECIFIC Democrats who failed us.

And, to quote a recent dKos diary, "Enough Already with the Pathetic Excuses!" There is NO EXCUSE for ANYONE in Congress, Democrat OR Republican, to further erode our civil liberties. Unlike some around here, I recognize getting us out of Iraq is a process and we have been moving, slowly I admit, in the right direction. Impeachment needs more work, but I expect slow progress on that. Hoping for MORE progress on that, but the impeachment of Nixon took awhile to take off, too.

But more abandonment of the Constitution? No! To the 57 Democrats who joined the Republicans in attacking America: ENOUGH WITH THE PATHETIC EXCUSES! You are NOT protecting America. Enough already. Enough. You are HURTING America. The Republicans and those 57 Democrats are SURRENDERING American democracy to Muslim extremists. Bush, the bulk of the Republican Party and those 57 Democrats are letting their fear of terrorism defeat America.

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

--Benjamin Franklin

We should tatoo that on the foreheads of every single politician who supported the Bush/Republican FISA fiasco. We should FORCE every single one of them to get that tatooed on their heads...in the name of national security, because if we lose the Constitution to fear, we lose the war against the terrorists.

But I am not one to just yell, or give up. Nor am I one who will blame all Democrats for what 57 Democrats did. Most Democrats voted against it...yet it still passed. So what do we do?

I have two suggestions.

The first suggestion I am taking from another disgruntled dKos diary:

This diary begins by saying that primary Challenges are a weak response. Although I believe a lot can be accomplished in primaries if more people paid attention, in genral I agree. Don't look to the next election to get busy. Just get busy now.  The author of this diary has some excellent suggestions for those who are pissed as hell. They essentially boil down to on't get angry. Don't get even. Get busy. Here are  her  specific and very powerful suggestions:

What else can we do?

    * Go to town halls. Make your voice heard as a constitutent
    * Schedule regular constituent meetings with staff and representatives wherever you are.
    * Schedule lobbying trips to DC to discuss at length the issues that matter.
    * Create our own legislation, like Energize America and find sponsors.
    * Create focused media events LOCALLY, addressing specific positions of your representatives, to appear in the local media.

Two examples:

In Buffalo a year or so ago, a small group of people scheduled a series of events on Net Neutrality, specifically requesting that Chuck Shumer take a position, and planned a rally and invited the media. i think they did it at his local office, or at a local event he was appearing at. At any rate, before the event happened, Shumer came out with a position, supporting the group. In the end the rally became a thank you, instead. The group gave him ample warning and made many requests. The pressure worked. Not everything will be that easy, but if we're smart and focused enough, it'll wear down, it'll work.  I can tell you one thing for sure, it'll work a LOT better than ALL DEMOCRATS SUCK! I'M NOT PARTICIPATING ANY MORE. Why did this one work? It was focused, it was specific, it was local.

Also, another Buffalo group that was focusing on housing issues spray-painted a picture of Governor Pataki on all the abandoned houses in town that a company that Pataki had dealings with owned and were sitting on, letting rot and damage neighborhoods and communities. They did lots of media events, lots of lobbying and collaborating with other elected officials. They hit ALL ANGLES.  And they're making progress. They got money from Pataki, thanks to all these pressure points, to start dealing with some of the housing issues. It wasn't everything they needed but it was a significant step forward that wouldn't have happened with out targeted pressure.  Embarrassment can work. Also, hitting multiple angles. Focused action.

And she ends with something most of us forget...and forget at our peril, as I will highlight at the end of this diary:

Listen, this shit is hard work. I understand people's frustration, but if we really want things to change, we gotta get focused and be willing to think and change course and strategize.

That is my first suggested course of action: Get Fucking Busy and Get in Their Faces! Democrat or Republican, call them, ask for an appointment. Call every day if you have to. Meet with them. Call them again. FAX them. Get your friends and family doing the same. Call them again. Ask for another appointment. Organize a local group to keep on calling them and getting in their faces.

That is the first thing to do.

The second is to focus attention more on organizations that are pulling the Democrats back to traditional, progressive American values rather than staying focused on the Democratic Party itself.

But first let me say that some Democrats in Congress deserve, and need, our help more than ever. Recently I set up a "Freshman Allstar" list. This was a list of Democratic freshmen Congressional Reps. who are being targeted by Karl Rove who have to date shown considerable leadership on progressive issues. Let me go on record right now that every single person I chose for my Freshman Allstars list voted AGAINST the Republican led attack on our Constitution. Every one of them. This is why I still stand up for the Democrats as a whole: because in the Democratic Party there are some EXCELLENT men and women and if we attack the party as a whole, then we are abandoning our best allies.

So let me once again highlight the Freshmen Allstars, who CONTINUE to show excellent leadership on practically every issue that matters to most of us, and hence are going to be heavily targeted by Republicans in 2008. You want Democratic spine? Show your support for these men and women who genuinely SHOW spine. THESE are the people we want representing us, so let's let them know that. This can be one of the best ways to influence Congress: support those who DO vote the way you like.

But in general, I say it is time to focus less on the Democratic Party per se, and to volunteer and donate far MORE to those groups who push a true, American progressive agenda on issues like Iraq, impeachment, clean elections, minimum wage, marriage equality, environment, civil liberties...etc. Give time and money to the groups that  have organized around the agendas that matter to you. This is another part of fighting hard: strengthening the infrastructure that we have really just barely gotten up and running. With this in mind, I give you a new list of mine,  highlighting NOT candidates, but America's Progressive Organizations. (For those who wonder, people DO donate to my Act Blue lists. To date I have collected more than $3000 towards the 2008 elections.)

I choose organizations like Stem Cell Action and Clean Water Action that focus on issues, I choose organizations like Mainstream Moms Operation Blue and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America PAC which are spearheading the fight to get us out of Iraq, I highlight organizations like South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families that are fighting for a woman's right to choose, and I highlight Democracy for America and it's offshoots that have revitalized, to some degree, the left thanks to Howard Dean's leadership. Fed up with the slow progress in Congress? These are the organizations that have given the grassroots an infrastructure that has started to make them effective for once. Let's make them MORE effective.

Republicans remain a threat to our democracy. Political insignificance is plain dumb. Some Democrats deserve our whole hearted support because THEY are doing what we elected them for. But mostly, we need to focus on fighting harder, louder and more on message than ever. And it will take time and effort.

Here is a dKos diary describing one person who confronted one of those Democrats who voted against democracy on the FISA issue at a Town Hall meeting. THIS is what we need to be doing. The experience was frustrating for the Kossack who confronted him, but make no mistake: I guarantee that the confrontation made an impact on the audience AND on the Senator. If it is an isolated event, then it will  mean little. If it happens again...and again...and again...then it will have an impact. I had a similar confrontation, in the company of a couple of dozen MoveOn.org activists, with a staff member of Chuck Schumer's over the first $87 billion Congress approved for Bush's illegal war. The confrontation we had DID make an impression. Sadly, those of us who participated allowed it to be an isolated incident. That was our mistake. And, too often, it is the mistake we ALL make. We need to make MORE phone calls and make appointments with our Congressional staff and attend town hall meetings. Confront the bastards who can't muster the spine to stand up to Bush. And confront the Republican bastards who are LEADING the attack on American democracy. Confront them ALL, Dem and Repub, on our Constitutional rights. Confront them ALL, Dem and Repub alike, about getting us out of Iraq. To quote the one, single good thing Ron Paul has said, "just bring them home now." And confront them all, Dem and Repub, on impeachment. Does American stand for the rule of law or arbitrary, authoritarian rule by the President?

Don't give up the fight. INTENSIFY the fight. That is my answer.

Remember:

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

The assault on American democracy by politicians, special interest groups and the media is so extensive and has been going on for so long that we cannot expect to turn things around all at once. The mega-business establishment has so much money that we cannot expect to dislodge it using money. If we attempt to do so, we will be disappointed.

Our strategy to save democracy should be to strike at the weak points of the system. One of those weaknesses, obviously, is truth. Do a little reading, use critical thinking and let your voice be heard in opinion polls on the Internet, by phone and by mail. Another neocon weakness is dependence on our consumerism. Buy a fuel-efficient car such as a Focus, Accord or Prius instead of a gas-guzzling SUV or pickup.

If each of us makes a few simple choices, we can all make a big difference.

Justin

Simple...or not so simple...but CHOICES. We all have many choices in life but many people don't USE those choices. My wife and I chose to spend about 50 cents a month extra to get all our energy supplied by wind power. My wife and I choose to use compact fluorescent bulbs...the light may be a bit worse, but we save about a third off our electric bills every month, MORE than making up for the extra we spend to get wind power.

IF we choose, we can make a difference. If we DON'T choose, then our choices are made for us. And we lose.

Progressives need to realize that their position on abortion is anything but progressive. I and the majority of Americans under 30 do not accept the idea of a "woman's right to choose". Americans are coming to recognize more and more clearly that abortion is murder, as the national abortion rate is almost down to 1973 levels. That is also why presidential candidates who are both pro-life and against the Iraq war, such as Ron Paul, have such a large public following.

Abortion is far more complicated than that. Too many who are anti-choice wind up defending a rapist's right to force a woman to have his child. Unintended, maybe, but that is one result of denying choice.

Ron Paul seems to have some integrity. Great. But he also is an extremist in too many ways. He is intelligent, but not mainstream. I welcome his voice because a diversity of voices is how America works. But he is not mainstream and not acceptable to most Americans. But maybe he, like Kucinich, who also is smart but not mainstream, can help guide the dialogue.

The vast majority of young women who have abortions in the United States were not raped but chose to have intercourse with their boyfriend. Then the women often end up having the abortion because they cannot afford to have the child. By making the choice to save sex for marriage, women do not have children until they are ready, and thus a perceived need for abortion disappears. Overwhelmingly, women who are offered financial assistance choose to carry their babies to term.

You can call me anti-choice if you want to, but studies show that abstinence is a far better choice for young singles. It removes excuses for abortion. Furthermore, the numerous side effects of abortion on women are now well documented.

And if you look into the history of abortion in the twentieth century, you will find that it is linked to genocide: Margaret Sanger and the Nazis considered it the weapon of choice to eliminate Jews, Blacks, Catholics and other groups of people regarded as "inferior." True to this dark philosophy, Hispanics and Blacks in the US have more abortions than all white women combined.

The numbers speak for themselves--abortions are declining. No one benefits from it. Every human life is precious, even the "accidental" ones. One of my cousins was conceived out of wedlock, and he is a wonderful young man whom I look up to. I am so glad my aunt did not abort him.

Ron Paul may be a little extreme in some areas such as his ideas of abolishing the income tax and eliminating foreign aid (I certainly don't agree with the latter). But Americans would much rather have someone like him president than any of the spineless, multimillionaire puppets the media are attempting to force down their throats.

First off, most Republicans (you can correct me if Ron Paul isn't one of them, but Brownback and Hucakbee sure are) think ALL abortion should be banned, even in cases where the mother's life is at risk or when the mother has been raped. That is extremism that is unacceptable to the overwhelming majority of Americans. Of course no one knows where Mitt Romney stands on this issue...or perhaps he stands everywhere.

As to pre-marital sex, it is normal. Period. Human beings have sex. Why people can't deal with that, I don't know. Abstinence doesn't even work for priests, let alone your average man and woman.  Of course if someone chooses to be celebate, that is their choice and more power to them. But placing it at the forefront of any policy is not reality based. STudies show (PDF) that more than 90% of Americans report haveing pre-marital sex. MORE than 90% and this was across generations. To base a policy on what 90% of Americans don't practice is useless...and extremist. Tell me...how many things do 90% of Americans agree on?? Well, having pre-marital sex is something 90% agree on at least in terms of doing it.

So teaching abstinence as the mainstay of any policy is useless. In fact, it is the BEST way to increase abortions, according to most studies. By contrast, reality based sex education, easy access to birth control, and legal abortion is the best combination for keeping down teen pregnancy rates, STD transmission rates...and yes, abortion rates.

Go with what works and what 90% of Americans can agree on. Recognize that humans have sex...it is the most natural thing out there and is how we evolved. Then look at what works best at keeping everyone as healthy as possible and the combination of reality based sex education, easy access to birth control and legal abortion works best. Making abortion illegal doesn't get rid of abortion. It only puts women at risk.

Mole333, let's not confuse issues here. Your survey fails to make the logical distinction between whether people have premarital sex and whether they consider it wrong. Human beings are weak and tend to do things they know are wrong. I bet if the survey asked people whether they feel guilty after premarital sex, you would be surprised how many people answer "yes." Again a little historical perspective helps. From the 1700s until the 1960s, premarital sex was considered wrong by virtually all Americans.

Also your survey above may be correct, but the fact that it was taken across generations is misleading. Have you heard of the recent survey that shows that just over 50 percent of American young people say they are abstaining from sex until marriage? This trend in my generation is unmistakable, up from 43 percent in the 90s.

If the idea that unborn babies, fetuses and even embryos have the inalienable right to life does not make sense to you, ask yourself if you are happy to be alive. If your answer is "yes," then you can thank your Mom for not aborting you. We could not even be having this conversation if she had exercised her "right to choose." That is why abortion is so unfair and antithetical to democracy--abortion is fine for other preborn human beings as long as I'm alive and enjoying MY right to life!

I bet if you asked people if they enjoyed it they would also say yes.

Guilt does not mean it is wrong. Sex is not wrong, if done with mutual consent. There is NOTHING wrong with consetual sex of any sort. Why should it be made a subject of guilt?

Just because something may be enjoyable does not make it right. Premarital sex is wrong, period. The mutual consent of spouses in marriage is what renders sex between them perfectly healthy and normal. Premarital sex certainly was not normal during the first 170 years of our nation's history.

This abnormal practice has led to numerous problems in American society. Last month I received the sad news that my 30-something friend's wife divorced him. They engaged in sex before marriage and the resulting child made them feel compelled to marry. The guilt, increased incidence of crime for children of divored parents, and other repurcussions of premarital sex are simply not worth it.

I found it interesting that you did not challenge most of my points and statistics in this little debate. You just can't argue with facts.

Well, I really tried to be nice. Fact is you don't have a clue what facts are. You make up a fantasy realm and call it fact. Premarital sex, as far as anyone has ever been able to tell, has always been the norm. And, quite honestly, your view that it is wrong makes no sense what so ever. None. Zip. Zilch. What is wrong is being so condemning of it that you make it dangerous by ostracizing children born out of wedlock, denying people access to birth control, and having sex education focusing on abstinence that is proven not to work.

I have better things to do than argue with someone who thinks his own fantasies are facts and seems to have almost no knowledge of history, anthropology or science, given your take on pre-marital sex.

Okay, mole333, it's been nice talking with you. I also tried to be nice. If you think I wasn't, I can have my card-carrying conservative friend Roee contact you. She will blast you to smithereens on this subject.

It's obvious that we have a disagreement. I am encouraged in my convictions by the fact that you did not even attempt to challenge much of what I said. The historical link between abortion and racism, the declining number of abortions in the US, as well as the inherently anti-democratic nature of abortion (we decide which members of the next generation get to be born and which don't), cannot be logically disputed.

Take it from a survivor of the abortion holocaust--more than 40 million innocent babies dead since 1973. I was born in the mid-80s, during the peak of that period. I am grateful to be alive, but I wish I had a few more friends my age. They are gone forever.

Enough said, I'll put you on my prayer list.

Justin

by Just060807 on 09/28/2007 09:05:14 AM EST

[ Parent ]
I don't want your prayers. I have my own religion and it is NOT YOURS. Don't impose your religious fantasies on me.

And as to your friend "Roee," all I can say is I dare you. I triple dog dare you. I went easy on you because you were clearly pretty scientifically illiterate (like far too many Americans). But I seriously doubte you or "Roee" will get very far telling people to not have sex. Look how well that does: teen pregnancy is highest where abstinence only is most taught and look how well celebacy works with Catholic priests. Judaism (my religion, so keep your Christian beliefs to yourself, please) doesn't shun sex. It does put rules on it that don't always work, but it is FAR more realistic and accepting of sex than you seem to be. In Judaism it is a mitzveh for a married couple to have sex on the Sabbath. And men are required to please a woman during sex. And though sex outside of marriage is frowned upon, of course, it is recognized by the fact that Judaism is passed through the maternal line, not the (unprovable without that science you are so ignorant about) paternal line.

So don't give me your faux-sanctimonious BS. You are all about control, nothing more. Imposing YOUR beliefs on others whatever the cost to others. Your statements were never logical to begin with. Statistics show abortion declines with a.) increasing education; b.) increasing wealth; c.) better, honest and fact-based sex-education (NOT abstinence only, which is linked to INCREASED abortion); and d.) availability of contraceptives.

The link between racism and abortion is just as solid as the link between racism and conservativism. Both are real. Neither is necessary. Both are due to an illogical link between unconnected things. Abortion HAS been advocated by racists. So has Christianity. Are you also condemning Christianity? Your logic is extremely faulty here.

Many Nazis were German. Does that mean you can assume all Germans are Nazis? No. That is illogical. And yet you use the same reasoning regarding abortion and racism. You use illogical reasoning. I let it slide without derision. You want derision for your poor logic? I can oblige.

Anti-democratic nature of abortion? As opposed to the anti-abortion stand that defends the rights of rapists and perpetrators of incest to force a woman to carry their offspring? You really think forcing a woman to carry a rapist's baby is somehow "democratic?" That is SERIOUSLY messed up!

Don't pray for me. Your religion is not mine. I know many Christians whose religion I respect. Yours doesn't impress me and I don't need your help. Keep your prayers to yourself. Don't force your beliefs on others. It is VERY un-democratic.
