The Greatest Nation in the World?

The U.S.A. is approximately 232 years old. Greece lasted approximately 400 years. Rome lasted nearly 600 years. So, obviously in length of time the U.S. has a way to go to match either Greece or Rome in longevity. But sadly the U.S. is now in somewhat of a downward spiral.
After World War II there was no doubt about the fact that the U.S. contribution in manpower and funding did turn the tide of the Nazi rampage. The Marshall Plan helped mightily to restore Europe and England, which had been devastated by Nazi bombing missions.
With over 50 million dead as a result of World War II it was hoped that world leaders would recognize at last that going to war and bombing the hell out of designated nations does not solve problems.
The United States conducted a divisive war in Vietnam. The U.S. war marching propagandized with something called the "domino theory." This theory simply stated was that if the U.S. didn't stop the Communists there, all of Asia would ultimately collapse to Communism like a row of dominoes.
That much vaunted theory delivered death to approximately 56,000 U.S. service men. The ones left living were dashing hastily to airplanes to leave. The cost in lives and taxpayer debt was enormous. Saigon stood fast, and the Asian nations never fell like a row of dominoes.
What we actually won in death, destruction and debt is debatable, that's for sure. The latest Iraq War is evidence that the U.SA. learned noting about racing to war without being threatened by some devastating attack by Iraq.
The Terrorists and their horrifying attack on the World Trade Center killed approximately 3,200 people. The war against Iraq, a nation not behind the Trade Center attack, has killed an estimate 600,000 to a million people.
The freedom and democracy idealistic goals hastily latched onto when the "weapons" propaganda and nuclear scare tactic failed hasn't worked either. As rotten a ruler as Saddam was (backed by the way with U.S. war materials) Iraqis by the million never fled for their lives, did they? They have now after the U.S. Iraq War invasion.
A USA Today January 7 story ran the headline: JUSTICE ON HOLD IN QUADRUPLE MURDER TRIAL.
Another article in the same newspaper was headlined: GEORGIA COURTS, PUBLIC FRUSTRATED OVER CASE STALLED BY LACK OF DEFENSE FUNDS.
Brian Nichols overpowered a female Fulton County Courthouse sheriff's deputy, took her gun, and launched a wild killing rampage. Allegedly he shot the trial judge, the court reporter, and later that night a federal agent.
Later Nichols surrendered, but 3 years after the March 11, 2005 shootings, he has not been tried. If convicted he faces the death penalty. But this alleged 3-time killer has managed to get his trial delayed 5 times.
Nichols' lengthy case has consumed all the cash for indigent defense funds, with $1.5 million be spent to defend a man who was witnessed shooting 3 people.
Is this the kind of justice we want to export to other nations, claiming we are the greatest nation in the world?
On the same Page 3A in USA Today January 7 we read: REPORT: ACCUSED KILLER TRIED TO EAT BODY.
"A Texas man held on a capital murder charge in the death of his 21-year-old girlfriend had tried to cook and eat her body before police arrived, authorities said."
The next article on the same page stated: CHILD'S BEATING CAUGHT ON VIDEO TAPE.
The story that accompanied the headline revealed that a Detroit man was arraigned on child abuse charges in the beating of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son. The videotape from December 21 shows a man hitting, kicking and stepping on a child over a four-minute span.
Another article states: NO KIDS ALLOWED AT THIS DISNEY RESTAURANT.
The article explains that children under 10 are banned from Walt Disney World's high end restaurant.
Yet another article reveals how in the Golden State, California, advanced bookings are needed for Death Row prisoners:
"California, which has 670 prisoners awaiting capital punishment, would have to execute one inmate a day for nearly two years to clear its Death Row."
A Seattle Times January 8 editorial states:
"More than 20,000 images of child pornography are posted on the Internet each week."
As for family values, over 50% of marriages in the U.S.A. end in divorce. The normal U.S. family life style is a single mother caring for her children.
Before the candidates for president of the U.S.A. rant on with the boast of the U.S.A. being the "greatest nation in the world" a question must be asked: Is the U.S.A. today, now a nation with a lifestyle we claim we will kill for in Iraq so others might enjoy consistent with the style of freedom and democracy we actually possess?
